Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janiece Jenkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janiece, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am happy as a business owner.
I did not plan to quit my previous job, so when it happened, entrepreneurship was not on my mind. I thought I would start applying and transition into another job, but that was far from what happened. I was freelancing on the side, so I didn’t think anything of it when I found myself attracting client after client. I’m very passionate about the importance of community and people being within their destinies, so I had a few side projects going that revolved around ways to provide various resources to friends and family. This included business consulting, community talks about plants and our health, and my art.
After some time, I realized I wanted my freelancing to have a stronger vehicle for providing services as my passion projects and “work” were now starting to overlap, so I went forward with forming my LLC, Witness in Color. This process has been absolutely beautiful in the way that it’s continued to unfold and support me, so when the topic of a regular job comes up – I’m indifferent, to be honest.
Prior to being a business owner, my job was a huge part of my identity. This isn’t uncommon in our society, as when we meet new people, the second question after asking your name is, “What do you do?” It was a problem for me, though, because working full-time in the start-up industry can be all-consuming, leaving little time and energy to spend on passion projects or living outside of building someone else’s business.
But I enjoy problem-solving. I enjoy supporting a team and providing solutions. I enjoy being a resource to those who want to bring their passions to life with my expertise and experience (this is my Virgo in the 6th house talking).
So now that I’m a business owner and doing the same work but through a vehicle that primarily supports my passions and my freedom, as well as fuels my desire of how I want to position myself in this world FIRST, I’ve found euphoria. I could go back to a regular tomorrow, but being a business owner has clarified the vision of why I’m even working in the first place. A regular job can now be positioned as a way to be introduced into a new network or as a way to develop new skills that I can then apply to my clients through Witness in Color.
This is the power of community: understanding our role within our community and how to take action within our destiny. My process of becoming a business owner has given me so much insight into myself that no regular job could ever take that away.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After completing my studies at Northern Arizona University, I received a bachelor’s in Business Management and a certificate in Enterprise Systems. I went on to navigate management positions but noticed the plethora of brilliant business ideas in my own community that weren’t progressing because they didn’t know where to start.
Because of this, I was inspired to transition to the start-up industry to help small business owners develop Fortune 500 company-like growth strategies. That led to the creation of Witness in Color, a company that provides resources to incredible people who are doing incredible things.
I believe in community empowerment, which begins with everyone playing their role! So, outside of resources for project management, marketing, and business plans, I’m also a cheerleader for my clients. Transitioning from corporate or having bosses to entrepreneurship can be hard, so I’m here to hold them accountable and make the dream tangible through strategies that meet them where they’re at.
I’m a creative at heart, so I love watching my clients get into their creative energy and provide new services to their community.
My services include 1:1 consulting or project management through the services listed above as well as teaching online or in-person courses. I’m proud of the community of entrepreneurs that I’m supporting in my work and can’t wait for how Witness in Color will continue to unfold.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This is simple – good work. Doing good work is the first step in a marketing plan, as nothing is as invaluable as a word-of-mouth referral and the portfolio to prove that you are who you say you are.
I encourage my clients to focus on providing value at the core of everything that they do because after that, money will flow, bringing expansion and new customers.
Any advice for managing a team?
What’s worked for me is taking care of myself so my morale stays high, and then transparency.
My aura, my passion for what I do, whatever you want to call it – is the main thing that makes managing a team easy. They trust my leadership, so I have to ensure that my energy is right when approaching them so they can then take that energy, and use it to cocreate. They can tell when the vibes are off because it’s usually reflected in the business if folks are paying attention.
So when things are not peachy, transparency conveyed in a solution-focused way is key to getting the train back on the tracks.
