Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janie Tyler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Janie, thanks for joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I started over, I would approach my entire way of talking with clients differently. It’s been the biggest change in my business over the years and has made the biggest difference in literally ~everything~. I think that really connecting with myself and who I am has allowed me to show up for my clients fully authentic. I now treat my clients like they are my everything, and they are!! I just wasn’t communicating that before. I wasn’t asking the right questions. I wasn’t letting them really tell their story. Additionally, the people I want to work with CARE about the important things. They’re intentional, put love above all else, and are okay with who they are. So having genuine conversation with people and helping them feel heard is what changed my business for me. None of these AI responses. It feels like more important work now that I take that on myself. I love doing it! It feels like I really attract the people that make my heart soar while on photo shoots. I also really prefer genuine human interaction in any business that I seek out. I don’t care about convenience. I care about quality and slowing down in life. So making that super apparent in my business has actually made me more successful! I guess what I’m trying to say is, show up as YOU. Really tell people what it is that you and your business stand up for. Make your vision and your values clear, put your heart and soul into everything you do, and the rest will fall into place!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Janie Tyler. I’m a wedding, elopement, and portrait photographer, and most of the time I refer to myself as a storyteller. My love for documenting started in my early early childhood. I can’t even remember the exact age! I recorded EVERYTHING. I used my parents camcorders and lil cameras all the time growing up and loved being able to capture my family, my friends, and the places that meant the most to me. I’ve never been without some sort of photo/video device. It’s apart of me. I always valued photographs over souvenirs when traveling as a kid, and that has forever stuck.
So I guess you could say I was born a photographer haha. I don’t know anything else!!! I love people, I love talking to people, and I love that we all live separate little lives that are all meaningful and different and complex in their own way. Most of all, I love telling those stories.
My business is so much more than pretty pictures. It’s connection, it’s slowing down, and really digging into what matters most to each individual. That’s what I sell: an experience. A holding of space for you to show up exactly as you are. A place where all emotion is held and loved, all quirks and flaws and the human experience are seen as art. I help people get away from the never ending fast paced life that so many people get caught up in. I help them tune into themselves and into each other (during couples shoots + weddings). I slow them down, listen to their story, and capture it for them. It’s my heaven! It lights me up! Holding space for people to just be is straight up magic.
It’s so much deeper than just pretty pictures. It’s capturing life, it’s telling stories that people don’t have the words for, and it’s incredible.
I leave almost all of my meetings/calls, shoots and events having turned clients into friends, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I wouldn’t say I have a huge audience honestly, but I am so stinkin proud of every single person who does follow along. I’ve gotten to a place where I’m super excited about everyone who’s invested time into my lil corner of the internet. If you really show up consistently and authentically your people. will. find you. And if you show up as a different or watered down version of you, you’ll attract whatever that person is putting out. When you show up for your business people see it. They respect it. When you really allow yourself to be honest about who you are and what you care about, you get the people who understand and support you wholeheartedly. That’s my best advice. BE YOU. Give your clients a chance to connect with you! Also, being overly professional is a little overrated. People want realness. Be real!
