We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janice Myers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’m a self-taught designer, and my learning process has been hands-on from the start. I’ve developed my skills through consistent practice, supplemented by online tutorials, courses, and books. A major turning point in my growth was working as a freelance designer for a digital agency. They entrusted me with leading a project for a global brand, which pushed me to use three new software tools I had never touched before. That experience gave me the confidence to tackle challenges head-on and reinforced the importance of learning by doing.
To accelerate my growth, I would have dedicated more time to personal creative projects, experimenting just for fun rather than focusing solely on paid work. Creativity thrives when you “play” and take risks, and I believe that’s where the best learning happens. By giving myself the freedom to experiment, I could have developed new skills faster and with a more open mind.
The most essential skill is the ability to learn continuously. Everything can be learned, so staying curious and being willing to adapt is key. You need to be ready to let go of what you think you know and be open to new ideas and techniques. It’s about evolving constantly, staying curious, and always striving to improve. Being tech-savvy and able to quickly learn new tools is also crucial in the design world. With the constant evolution of software and technology, having the ability to pick up new tools on a dime allows you to stay competitive and versatile in your craft.
The biggest obstacles have been time management and the constant demands of work and life. There’s always more to do than time allows, and balancing everything can be challenging. As a parent, raising kids adds an extra layer of complexity—juggling work commitments with family responsibilities can feel like a constant race against the clock. But that’s part of the journey. Finding the balance between being present for my family and dedicating time to my professional growth has been one of the most significant challenges, but also one of the most rewarding.

Janice, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Janice Myers, CEO and President of Greyhaven, a creative agency that specializes in crafting compelling stories through design and visual media. My journey into the creative industry started as a self-taught graphic designer, driven by a deep passion for storytelling through visuals. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills by immersing myself in various design projects, from freelance work to larger contracts for digital agencies, where I led projects for global brands. Those experiences helped me learn the ropes and adapt quickly, developing a knack for diving into new tools and techniques.
At Greyhaven, we offer a wide range of services including graphic design, branding, creative direction, motion graphics, post-production and finishing. My team and I have had the privilege of working on film trailers, music videos, social media campaigns, and key art for major projects, including films like Journey to Bethlehem and Letter to the American Church. We don’t just design visuals—we craft brand stories that resonate with the audience, helping our clients make bold statements in their industries.
One of the core problems we solve for clients is translating their vision into something tangible and visually captivating. Whether they need a full brand identity or marketing collateral, we aim to create designs that not only look great but align deeply with their core message. What sets us apart is our intentional approach to design—everything we create is driven by purpose and strategy, not just aesthetics. We’re known for taking on complex, multi-layered projects and delivering high-quality results, whether it’s an entire film production or a startup’s brand identity.
What I’m most proud of is the impact we’ve made on the brands we work with, helping them stand out and connect with their audiences on a deeper level. I also take immense pride in the way Greyhaven has evolved, especially as we expanded into post-production, graphic design, and digital marketing. Seeing our designs take life in the form of movie posters, trailers, and social media campaigns is incredibly rewarding.
The main thing I want potential clients to know about me and my brand is that we are deeply committed to excellence. At Greyhaven, we are not just service providers—we’re partners in bringing your vision to life. I believe in continuous growth, both personally and professionally, and that philosophy is embedded into everything we do. We take the time to understand our clients, so our work reflects their unique stories and goals.
Ultimately, we strive to create work that not only stands out creatively but also delivers results, helping brands make their mark in the world.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At the heart of my creative journey is the desire to tell stories that matter—stories that not only captivate but also inspire and elevate. My mission has always been about more than just creating visually appealing work; it’s about using design as a tool to bring meaning and connection into people’s lives. Whether I’m working on a brand identity, a film trailer, or a marketing campaign, my goal is to help others communicate their vision in a way that resonates deeply with their audience.
One of the driving forces behind my work is the belief that every brand, every person, has a story worth telling. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to bring that story to life in the most authentic and impactful way possible. This sense of purpose comes from my own experiences of growth—balancing my career with family life, constantly pushing myself to evolve in a fast-paced industry, and never settling for less than excellence.
On a more personal level, I’m driven by the idea of continuous improvement. Every project is a chance to push my boundaries and grow creatively. I’ve learned that creativity thrives in spaces where challenges exist, and for me, the journey has been about embracing those challenges—learning new tools, taking on projects outside of my comfort zone, and always striving to be better than I was yesterday.
Ultimately, my mission is to create work that leaves a lasting impact, both for my clients and for myself. I want people to see the heart and intention behind every design, knowing that it was crafted with care, thoughtfulness, and purpose. More than just achieving goals, I aim to create something meaningful that reflects the highest standard of quality and integrity. That’s what fuels me every day.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes, there are definitely resources I wish I had discovered earlier in my journey. Instead of relying on broad educational platforms, I now see the value in pursuing specialized learning from experts in the design field. Focusing on courses that dive deeply into specific areas of design like logo creating, brand identity and motion graphics would have sharpened my skills much faster and helped me develop a more solid foundation early on.
Additionally, finding a strong community and mentorship would have been transformative. Having a mentor who could guide me not only in mastering design but also in navigating the business side—client communication, presenting ideas, and confidently managing projects—would have been invaluable. A supportive community of creatives also helps you grow by sharing ideas, offering feedback, and providing encouragement, which is essential in a field where you’re constantly evolving.
Another resource I wish I had tapped into earlier is business development. Understanding how to price services based on value rather than just time spent was a game-changer for me. Knowing how to structure my projects, position my offerings, and communicate my value to clients would have saved me from many early mistakes. These elements—specialized learning, mentorship, community, and business development—are what have truly elevated both my craft and my business.
