Janice, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.

I will have to take a page out of Nene Leakes book or interview. I have to show up as my authentic self in the wellness space. In order for the guest/client to receive the healing that is going to take place and for me to heal as well. It works both ways in this industry. If I cannot show up in my authentic self, I do not want to be present or participate. I remember suffering from headaches from being in environments that did not approve of my authentic self. I would say my brand gives authenticity, creativity, and cutting edge skills.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Janice Hughes (thee Baltimore sugarista), I own a wellness day spa called Haute Healin’ Handz. I started off as a massage therapist and went back to school for esthetics because I was interested in body treatments & waxing. During my time as a massage therapist, I thought I was going to use the skill to expand my career in sports medicine. Life has its own plans; I took a training course in prenatal & postpartum therapy which pivoted my interest in prenatal care. After esthetic school, I took up an interest in sugaring instead of waxing. The world shut down. I was already working on my business plan, but life had other plans.

I opened Haute Healin’ Handz in 2020, begin servicing the community. The services that Haute Healin provides prenatal/postpartum therapeutic touch, sugaring, skincare, and body treatments. Haute Healin Handz provides a safe alternative holistic luxury healing space. Clients get to show up as their authentic selves.

Haute Healin Handz competed in the 2022-2023 The Interantional Skin Games and won the Sugaring Artist of the Year.

I have started Baltimore Sugaring Academy to train licensed professionals in the art of sugaring.

How did you build your audience on social media?

I built my audience on social media by creating a persona with my Bathrobe which is bathrobe shenanigans. Some tips I would give to build social media presence
1.educate the audience
2. re-use content
3. Have your CTA’s ready (Call to Action
4. Just put the content out

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

I am pivoting in my career right now. I have decided that I would like to do other ventures such as creating my podcast called Tea Talk, on-line courses, and becoming a wellness influencer.
