We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janice Green. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janice below.
Janice, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client?
The best advice that I ever gave a client was “It’s not your house.” Crazy sentiment, right? Coming from your real estate broker. The Metro area is a competitive market. I am normally the first or the last stop for my clients. They have either been in a brokerage relationship where they felt the agent cared more about the deal then their future happiness, or they were referred directly from the onset of their experience.
Clients have to know that from the moment we meet, we will do our absolute best to help them and service their needs. Our actions speak volumes about how far we will go for their benefit.
That said, when we navigate the buyers’ market, they have to know that we will write our best offer every time AND if we lose “It’s just not YOUR house.”
In the previous years the number of offers coming through the market were tremendous but every client that I sat down with and shared this sentiment, is now in a home that they love. A home uniquely meant for them, They get it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I was a child, I traveled with my mother. She was the East Coast Director of a large beverage company and had offices up and down the East Coast. We used to drive and I loved how the scenery changed from Williamsburg to DC, Baltimore to Philadelphia. Architecture was always at the forefront of my mind. I finished school and worked in the retail and restaurant industries. In 2004 I decided that I wanted to work for myself. I was not fulfilled by my corporate position, and I wanted to have control of my own career.
That was my very first introduction to real estate. It was terrifying! I left a fantastic job with a great salary and benefits, to go back to school and study for a real estate license. You only make money if you actually SELL something, and you had to generate business for yourself. I joined a brokerage and set out on my path.
The market would crash in 2008, I would go back to the corporate world, open and close my own restaurant, return to someone else’s brokerage before I had the courage to open one of my own.
To do this took the love and encouragement of my partner and friends.
If you ask me what sets us apart-US. The ladies of Maven Realty. Myself, Gail Carter, Lynae Solomon and Deirdre Brown.
That is the difference, We work harder and smarter than any large brokerage that I know. Now that I have shown our value, racking up a sales award each year-I have chosen not to sell out. Not to give up and try to continue our growth year after year.
I am most proud of what we are building. What we have done so far and what we will do in the future.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Real Estate how we know it, is changing. We recognize this. We are at a time where we are re-evaluating. Deciding where our paths will lead us. There is so much to explore in this space. You’re going to see us do many different things in the upcoming year but we will keep growing and representing women in this industry.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
In the years after the market crash in 2008. I opened a restaurant in New Orleans. It was the most compulsive and scariest thing I had ever done. While we had to sell that idea before leaving 3 years later, that experience taught me about resilience. It taught me about problem solving, adversity and perseverance. I learned that it isn’t always just hard work that makes you successful. True success is hard work and love. I LOVED that experience and I love real estate. I will always find my success here even when the landscape begins to change.
