We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janice Grant . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janice below.
Janice , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I would always sing around the house growing up, thanks to my dad. He always played oldies and I would sing with him. So much so, my mom had no hesitation telling us to shut-up. at times, I would write poetry and sit my mom and dad down and give them a show. One time my mom sheds some tears on how beautiful my poem was, from there I wanted to be poet. All throughout middle/highschool, I knew music better than I knew my school work. I played sports very well, because of music. i made sure each year.. I took Chorus because I loved to sing. I actually self-taught myself the piano since the 6th grade. I wanted to be a performer!
Music helped a lot after my Junior year of HS.. when I sprained my toe, training for the junior Olympics. I was crushed, got into a depressive state.. then my mom bought me turn tables. Which led me learning music in a way different light than I did before. That was the icing on the cake for me, I knew now all these signs.. I had no choice but to make this into a career move.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For folks that don’t know me or about me. I always tell them what you see it was you’ll experience and more. I’m a very bold person and I showcase it better in my music. My music gives me the lane of expression that most don’t understand while consuming my product. I can thank my parents for introducing what I always had in me. I don’t think they know they are the reason for my eccentric music taste. From my mom being Haitian and moving to NY and finishing her years in Florida. The music she heard within her years of growing gave me an insight of melodic passion. My dad Jamaican born and raised to being an American Citizen and listening to the beautiful bliss of R&B. Introducing me to a world of sounds, I’d be foolish not to listen.
My work ethic is one that sets me apart from most. I read a lot of books growing up and created stories and fantasies that makes my vernacular unmatched. I can write a song in less than 20 minutes by with the help of ‘user-story’ I am a great story teller, I use that to my advantage every time. I do that, so my music is relatable even if it’s not my story. I make my music, your story. What you are afraid to talk about, what you are afraid to speak. You can always find your voice in me.
I am disciplined while working on music, I block everything out. I just need to hear my thoughts, I need to see my stories create themselves by the sound of the 808s.
I provide a safe space for my clients/audience. You can count on me for your intrusive thoughts, your secrets, your fantasies all that your heart desires. I provided a non-judgmental zone in my music. You’re thinking freaky thoughts, I speak the nastiest language to you.
I’m proud how far my sound has come. It came along way from my first poem, to my first song, to my first record and so on. I have gained of lot of knowledge along the way and I am excited what else I can learn. I am more so proud of not giving up, so many times i asked myself ‘what are you doing this for’ but i found my purpose in my music.
I want future fans/clients/audience to know. I’m here for y’all. Who cares what people have to say. I walk the walk and talk to the talk.. & if you don’t like the way i move, then I’m not for you. That’s okay, one day you’ll hear something you’ll love. That’s from me to you with love. I’m open to work with any and everyone. I don’t discriminate when it comes to sounds. We all have the same mission, and it’s to be heard.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Things don’t happen overnight. People want to get into the music industry to be famous and or to be seen. That’s totally understandable but if that’s the mission and goal.. you won’t see it for a while. Put your craft in your vision and make it tunnel, don’t let other’s perception make you fumble. Don’t fold on yourself for clout. Let your talent speak, real talent is timeless and always waiting to be heard/seen. You don’t need others approval to feel adequate that you’ve made it. You walk with your head high and your heart humble. You will see results and success, stay true to you.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I really want to give back to my parents. My parents have done alot for me and my future and the least I can do, is show them my appreciation. I don’t want them to work and worry about my little sisters. This system unfortunately isn’t built for us to win and succeed at a timely manner. I need my parents to enjoy the life they worked so hard for before it’s too late. I love them to the death of me and I want them to know I only and I always have done this for them. Always will.
