We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janice & Edwin Ng a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janice & Edwin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
We have been able to earn a full-time living from our wedding photography and videography business, but it wasn’t an overnight success. When we first started, we were simply passionate about capturing love stories, inspired by our own wedding experience. At the beginning, we worked on smaller projects, often balancing our creative work with other responsibilities. It took time to build our portfolio, establish trust with couples, and gain recognition in the industry. However, through persistence, we turned our passion into a sustainable business that allows us to do what we love every day.
Our journey was shaped by several key milestones that helped us grow. One of the most important steps was refining our style and brand to attract the right couples—those who resonate with our storytelling approach. Building relationships with vendors and venues also played a significant role in our success, leading to more referrals and consistent bookings. Over the years, we expanded our reach by embracing social media and showcasing our work through platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Additionally, our ability to connect with diverse cultures, thanks to our fluency in multiple languages, has allowed us to serve a wide range of couples and be part of meaningful cultural celebrations.
It certainly wasn’t like this from day one. Early on, we faced challenges like pricing our services correctly, managing workload, and standing out in a competitive market. We had to learn not only the creative aspects of photography and videography but also the business side—marketing, client experience, and workflow optimization. Over time, we found ways to streamline our process, including incorporating wellness practices like yoga and body abs to maintain our energy during wedding seasons. These small yet impactful changes helped us provide a better experience for our couples while ensuring sustainability in our work.
Looking back, there are definitely things we could have done to speed up the process. If we had focused on social media more aggressively, and outsourced editing sooner, we might have reached this level of success faster. However, every step of the journey taught us valuable lessons, and we appreciate the organic growth we’ve had. The experiences, challenges, and relationships we’ve built along the way have made us not just better photographers and videographers, but also better storytellers and business owners.

Janice & Edwin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At One and Only Production, we provide high-quality wedding photography and videography services tailored to each couple’s unique love story. Our work is deeply rooted in storytelling, capturing not just the big moments but also the quiet, intimate exchanges that make weddings so special. Whether it’s a traditional cultural ceremony or a modern wedding, we strive to create a visual narrative that reflects each couple’s personality and heritage. Our fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English allows us to connect with diverse couples, ensuring their traditions and emotions are captured with care and authenticity. Beyond weddings, we also offer engagement sessions, family, anniversary, and proposal.
What sets us apart is our commitment to creating a joyful and stress-free experience for our couples. We understand that weddings can be overwhelming, so we bring a sense of calm, energy, and positivity to every shoot. To maintain this balance, we incorporate yoga and wellness into our routine, ensuring that we show up for our couples with full presence and enthusiasm. Our approach is not just about taking beautiful photos and films—it’s about making sure our couples feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated on their big day. We also take pride in building strong relationships with vendors and venues, allowing us to provide a seamless and well-coordinated experience.
What we are most proud of is the trust our couples place in us to document one of the most important days of their lives. Seeing their reactions when they receive their photos and films—whether it’s tears of joy or heartfelt messages of gratitude—reminds us why we do what we do. Our goal is to continue capturing love stories with passion and artistry, always evolving while staying true to our belief in the power of love and connection. For potential clients, followers, and fans, we want them to know that we are more than just photographers and videographers—we are storytellers, partners in their journey, and dedicated artists who care deeply about preserving their most cherished memories.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Two books that have significantly influenced our approach to business, creativity, and client relationships are Atomic Habits by James Clear and How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. These books have shaped our mindset in terms of personal growth, habit-building, and fostering meaningful connections—key aspects of running a successful wedding photography and videography business.
Atomic Habits has helped us refine our daily routines and improve our efficiency as entrepreneurs. James Clear emphasizes the power of small, consistent improvements, which resonates deeply with us. In the early days of our business, we often felt overwhelmed by everything we had to manage—client bookings, editing, social media, and networking. By implementing Clear’s approach of stacking small habits, we created sustainable workflows, such as dedicating a set time for editing each morning or engaging with potential clients daily. These micro-improvements compounded over time, making our business more productive and less stressful.
On the other hand, How to Win Friends and Influence People has been instrumental in shaping the way we interact with clients and vendors. Dale Carnegie’s principles, such as showing genuine interest in others, remembering names, and making people feel valued, have helped us build strong, lasting relationships. In the wedding industry, trust is everything, and by applying these principles, we’ve fostered a warm, personal connection with couples. This book has also guided us in handling difficult conversations, ensuring that every interaction—whether resolving concerns or collaborating with a team—is approached with empathy and positivity.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We built our social media audience by focusing on authentic connections and storytelling rather than just showcasing our work. Our engagement sessions feel like a fun double date, where we get to know our couples on a deeper level, making them feel comfortable and capturing their natural chemistry. By also exploring their social media, we gain insight into their personalities, interests, and wedding vision, allowing us to create content that truly reflects their love story. This personal approach makes our posts more than just a portfolio—it becomes a space where future couples can see themselves in our work. For those starting out, our biggest advice is to prioritize relationships over reach; engage meaningfully, share the story behind your work, and let your personality shine. When couples connect with who you are beyond just your craft, they’ll trust you to document their most cherished moments.
