We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janey Lopaty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janey below.
Janey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I think that I am personally very hands on with all the companies I work with. I have a styling, sales and design background also so I will help many brands not only with PR but their overall look with styling photoshoots for their instagram or website. This has helped many of my brands with sales showing them in a new light while keeping true to themselves . I have worked in the industry for around 30 years and work closely with many stylists ,celebrities and influences and give brands feedback about what people are looking for and what they may be interested in to help them with design or what they may want to add to their line. I always try to be available to everyone that I work.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have a Fashion PR company with a showroom in Los Angeles. Fashion Brands will hire me to get their clothes on celebrities and influencers and in front of stylists. I have always loved fashion and went to FIDM and Parsons in New York. I was doing styling and helped open up a store called Stacey Todd. I was childhood friends wit one of the owners of Juicy Couture Pam Levy and she saw what I had been doing and she asked if I could come work for them and try to get clothes on celebrities. Back then we did not really know what this was even called Brand Placement especially for everyday wear cause this was mostly done for the red carpet at the time. I called a few connections and got Juicy to Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Selma Blair and Christina Applegate. I would just walk up to anybody and say I am Janey from Juicy can I send you some clothes. I just started to build trusting relationships with people. I was always very authentic and luckily for me they were really receptive. I tried to try to think out of the box and I started monograming on the terry and velour tracksuits. Madge for Madonna, Jlo for Jennifer Lopez and we did Britney Spears wedding to Kevin. Since I have a styling background I really watch what different celebrities liked and how they dressed and their personal style so I would send them pieces that they would really like and most likely wear. Every box I sent was customized to the person . You could not open a magazine for a decade with out seeing someone in Juicy. 15 years ago I left Juicy to start my own company so I could worked with a variety of brands from mens, womens, accessories from dressy to casual. It is my passion
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think being really authentic people can really tell. I think being hands on my brands can really see that I am invested in their line. I think with stylists and celebrities that I work with since I come from a styling background they trust my taste level and feel comfortable with me helping them out or sending things. The people that I work with know that I will bend over backwards for them to try to help a stylist out or be available to a client.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I think the best source of new clients are word of mouth . A lot of times I have worked with a company and someone I work with leaves that company and work for a new brand and they will reach out to see about working together there. Also there are brands that will tell their friends about my company or stylists that I work with will let me know about a brand that is looking for someone. In the last year I have gotten better about posting articles about me on linked in and Facebook. This was actually a Voyage article on me and there are a few people that reached out to me to work together because it reminded them of what I do and reconnected me with people. Since I do PR for other brands I find it hard to put myself out there but it has really paid off recently when I have done so.
