We recently connected with Janette Castro and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Janette, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?

I am beyond happy being a cake decorator. I feel true passion when I decorate a cake or when I come up with a design for a customer. It makes me so happy when I get to be a part of their memories.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is Janette Castro
I’m originally from Chicago Illinois but raised in Minnesota! Since a very young age I had a business mindset. I remember having yard sales and selling old toys I didn’t use, I remember always trying new things. My mom and dad had their own restaurant and growing up watching them also had an impact on me. My mom has always been a business woman. She was always selling something! She would always tell me when you sell a service or product you’ll always have money in your pocket. I started baking desserts in 2020 after I had my daughter and I was on maternity leave. I was mostly doing it for fun but I started to really enjoy it, I made my first cake shortly after and I would offer friends cakes for free and they would always recommend me to their family and friends. Word of mouth is the best advertising. Youtube and google have been my go to for learning tips and tricks. I truly enjoy cake decorating and coming up with different flavors & recipes. I have a huge sweet tooth so I get to try my own creations 😋

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is being able to create something with my own hands. Sometimes you think you wouldn’t be capable of doing something.but when you do it you feel extremely proud and energized. Baking has really allowed me to unleash my creativity.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?

Definitely check out “ Do what you love the money will follow. This book is great and has helped me a lot through out my journey. I also watch TED talks and listen to business podcasts on audible :)
