Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janet Yonaty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Janet thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I am very happy as a business owner it gives me the freedom to work on my own time and travel and create and also help create jobs for others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My interest was always in fashion however in 1990’s when fashion changed and everything became about brands I directed my expertise in color coordination to interiors and in 2002 I opened my showroom on Melrose Avenue. I started with trimmings and fabrics of course trimmings were my passion and later expanded into wallpaper designing my own wallpapers and added furniture and lighting. I am now known as teh atelier that produces what you envision. We work on highend residences and five star hotels. Often I receive a sketch with what the designer imagines and I turn it into reality. I have earned my clients trust and respect over the past twenty years,
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I always wanted to be a fashion designer however my family would not allow it as I am from the Middle East and back in the day it was “The Seamstress” not the “Designer” . Years later I did open a Boytique for clothing in New York but clothing business changed drastically and I decided to turn my attention to the Interior World. Gratefully I have been very successful as I have a very strong sense of color and can combine colors well. I have a passion to create beautiful things and beauty and quality go hand in hand for me. I think that was always apparent in my work and helped me to achieve success.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
I think I was always a risk taker. When I rented the space for my showroom I always had my eye on buying the property however the landlord had no interest in selling it, After two years he approached me and told me he had received a very high offer for the property and since he had promised to give me the first choice he was sharing it with me. The offer was twice the market value, I distinctly remember the landlord telling me, ” I would never let you buy this for investment but since you are opposite the PDC and you are in the interior business it is your decision. I asked him for a few days, discussed it with my accountant, my family and a few other people everyone told me not to touch it, After much soul searching I decided I will buy it as I did not want to move from this location and I did. That year I was featured in Los Angeles Times in the business section”Gamble pays for textile designer” and was named the Small Business Person of the Year.
