We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janet Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janet, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
It started with a layoff. I was told that the company I worked for had not receive the contract to continue the work it had been doing for the city. During the 6 months we had left, I read an article about a woman that would conduct workshops for the employees of businesses on how they could be more effective by getting organized. I thought this is something friends and coworkers always said about me.
I began the research and discovered a national organization for professional organizers (NAPO) which led me to a local group of organizers. Connecting with the groups helped me learn the basics I needed to get my business up and running. I am thankful that I was still living at home, so I was able to start my business part time and within a year launched the business full-time.
With almost 30 years of experience the demand for organizers is still strong.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For the past 29 years, I have been assisting clients in creating a space that attracts more abundance, love, and happiness in their lives. My expertise includes transforming cluttered rooms into functional and creative spaces, organizing the personal and professional spaces of executives, and downsizing offices.
As a speaker, I have presented at the Philadelphia Home Show and conducted workshops at the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers’ Annual Conference. In 2023, I gave a webinar for a corporate client in New York that was attended by over 1200 people.
I am the host and producer of a weekly podcast “Got Clutter? Get Organized with Janet” for over a decade, which has received over 1,000,000 downloads and was ranked the Number 2 Organizing Podcast. The show covers a variety of topics, including how to get organized before getting married, how to be an organized pet owner, and how to organize your pantry for better health.
In addition to my speaking and podcasting experiences, I have appeared in two episodes of HGTV’s “Mission: Organization” and was featured on “The Rachael Ray Show” as “The Clutter Free Queen.” My work has also been featured in various publications and I have been a guest on several podcasts.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When March 2020 arrived my calendar for the first time when completely blank and I had to pivot to keep the cash flowing. The first way I pivoted was that I began offering virtual organizing services. Clients would send me photos and videos of their space and I would provide them step by step instructions on how to organize their space.
The second way I pivoted was that I started conducting more webinars. I learned all the platforms in order to do this effectively and even learned how to speak on a variety of topics. In 2022 I conducted nearly 200 webinars.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients has been referrals from existing clients.
