We recently connected with Janessa Scott Goliday and have shared our conversation below.
Janessa , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
When I was younger, my grandparents had their own bar and restaurant that I would always be at. As a kid, I knew I always wanted to own my own business but did not know what that business was going to be. It was around the year 2019 when I was at a business event that I realized I wanted to open up my own nutrition club. At the end of 2019, I started working in a local nutrition club so that I could not only learn how to work a nutrition club but also how to run one as well. That is a HUGE step. Learning from mentors or people who are where I would like to be is the first and foremost step I had to take. The next following year and a half I was a sponge to all the knowledge, asking all the questions, and worked as much as I could to save all I could to make my dreams become a reality. I knew I did not want to take out any loans to fund my dream so I just did things that were in my control. In the meantime, I looked at different locations that I potentially wanted to open up. I also had to contact the city in regards to what I was going to need to submit, fix, or provide in order to be opened up as quickly and efficiently as possible. Once the space was found, the lease was signed, and then opened a year and a half later.
Some key challenges I faced were a lot of stuff that was out of my control which made it a lot harder to work through. It took 5 months just to get the Building Permit to even start any build out work to the space. I also experienced issues with hiring certain architect drawers and contractors who made some mistakes that needed corrected. This not only costed more money but more time as well. There were times when corrections needed to be made or when things needed to be (re)submitted, it could sometimes take up to 7 business days to get any type of feedback if it was received/correct.
Advice I would give is to not cut corners and to remember that sometimes you pay for what you get.
Janessa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I actually went to college for Health Science and ended up going to Graduate School for Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Psychology so I am very interested in the human body and mind. While I was in Graduate School, I was still curious as to what I was going to do once I did graduate. When I was presented with the Herbalife Nutrition business opportunity, I knew it was a great option to incorporate into my life of helping others not only physically but mentally as well.
At my business, Club On Cleveland, we work on helping others become happier and healthier through good nutrition, fitness, and a positive community. Specifically, we offer healthy shakes and energizing teas, protein waffles, workouts, body transformation challenges, and other monthly community events. We help people of all age groups whether they are looking to lose weight, gain weight, tone up, get more energy, cleaner skin, digestive health, we got it. There is literally something for everyone.
One thing we are big on is a creating a loving and welcoming atmosphere for everyone who walks through our doors. Your home away from home. You can just taste the love in our shakes and teas. I am just so happy with the value that it provides the community. With all the crazy going on in this world, everyone deserves to have that one place they feel safe to go to.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think the most effective strategy is to not limit the business to just one or two ways of growing clientele.
It is not just enough to do social media or just face to face or just advertisement. You need to do it all. Surprisingly enough, not everyone has social media or they go on social media cleanses. So you have to find other ways to connect with those people.
If I did have to absolutely choose one as the most effective way for me specifically it would have to be sampling. Getting people to just try the products we offer, I know they will fall in love with it and want to try more. Like I said, there is literally something for everyone.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I am REALLY BIG on personal development. Its a daily thing I need to do to help me get my mind right. There are so many good books and people I listen to that have impacted my life dramatically.
Books: “Everything is Figuroutable”, “Who Moved My Cheese”, “Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life”, “The Four Agreements”, “Dare to Lead”, and “Get Our of Your Head”.
People: Eric Thomas, Jim Rohn, Mark Hughes, Steve Harvey, and John C Maxwell.
I know it may seem like a lot but when I think about these books or these people that I listen to, they really have helped me through different seasons of my life and challenged the way that I thought about things. I was not always an entrepreneur so my thinking definitely needed to grow and still continues to grow. I believe it was Jim Rohn who said “You need to work on yourself more than you work on your job.” The things listed above have helped me do that. Always remember to never stop being a student; never stop learning.
