We recently connected with Janese Maricelli and have shared our conversation below.
Janese, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Being successful is subjective to the individual. I feel very successful in raising my family, having created two profitable businesses, sitting on two non-profit boards, and working hard to better my community. In my fifteen years in Galveston, Texas I have worked hard to develop my brand. Now my name and JanMarAgency is synonymous with integrity and quality work. Through day-to-day hands-on work in the community, my business and personal connections have prospered, and I am forever grateful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My full name is Janese Deanne Maricelli-Thomasson. I grew up in South Houston and attended University of Houseon-Clear Lake where I received my Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a minor in the arts. After graduating with honors, top of my class, I took a job in San Diego. After several years in print design and publication marketing, I went on to work with some of the top marketing professionals in the San Diego area.
In 2009, my family and I returned to the Galveston, Texas area where I signed on as the Marketing Director for the largest environmental repair service organization in the nation. Although my time here was well spent and I enjoyed learning about the oil and gas industry, I felt my skills were better utilized in my own community. I was tired of crossing the causeway and decided to open my own agency in Galveston.
JanMar Agency is a full-service marketing and design firm. We work in the Galveston County area, the United States, and even some international accounts. The agency is now in its eleventh year and stronger than ever.
In addition to JanMar Agency, I started Culture Clash Magazine in 2017. We are a 32-page print publication based in Galveston, TX. We focus on taboo subjects and hot-button issues as they pertain to the Galveston area.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Start-up capital is always a factor and the story of how JanMar Agency was founded was no different. I had to start small with a $600 laptop and an internet connection. My communication and design skills allowed me to offer small jobs to local real estate agents and retail stores looking for print design assistance. Social media and online shopping started to see an uptick and that was the deciding factor to reach for more clients. Soon I had more work than I could handle. With new clients and more cash flow, I was able to bring on a second designer. Now, a decade later, we have a team of seven part-time and full-time marketers and designers.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has by far been the best source of new clients. Of course, Google Ads and Social Media are always a fun way to bring in new leads, we like our word-of-mouth referrals the best. JanMar Agency is all about quality relationships. We prefer working with people who recognize our values an appreciate the work we put into each of our client’s campaigns.
