We were lucky to catch up with Janelle Richardson aka J’Nelle recently and have shared our conversation below.
J’Nelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a vocal coach, I started off being trained in Opera and Jazz, which led me to more vocal training with Carlton Burgess. From there, Mr. Burgess encouraged me to be a vocal coach when I was around 22 years old. I did it for a couple years, then I stopped to focus more on my music, which I still do. Moreover, I got back into vocal coaching when I was around 27 years old. It birthed my company, Love Your Voice 101. The skills that were most essential were ear training and building confidence in my tone. The only thing that stood in my way of learning more was my comparing myself to others, but eventually I’ve learned to accept my voice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started off with singing and performing at a young age. As I got older, while being vocally trained, I was encouraged to pursue vocal coaching. I studied the voice and learned from my vocal coach, which led to my Love Your Voice 101 Business. I don’t just focus on singers, but speakers, rappers, and anyone who uses their voice consistently as their career. I’m an encourager and motivator who uplifts someone and their voice daily. I’m proud of the growth of my company and the individuals I get to inspire.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
The most rewarding part about being a creative is that you can be your own authentic self in the process.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
