We were lucky to catch up with Janelle Linares recently and have shared our conversation below.
Janelle , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I believe one of the key ways I set myself apart from the industry standard is through my approach to editing. Rather than sticking to a single, consistent editing style, I adapt my techniques to match the unique vibe and colors of each session. Whether it’s a moody, atmospheric shoot or a bright, energetic one, I take great care in tailoring the editing to amplify the mood and feeling of the moment. This personalized approach allows each set of images to feel fresh and distinctive, and I feel it enhances the overall experience for my clients, giving them a truly customized outcome that resonates with their vision.

Janelle , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a photographer, I’m passionate about capturing unique weddings and portrait sessions that reflect the individual personalities and stories of my clients. I strive to make each session feel personal and tailored to them, creating images that truly represent who they are. Whether it’s a wedding, a family portrait, or a personal shoot, I approach every session with a fresh perspective, ensuring that the vibe, colors, and emotions are perfectly captured. My goal is to create photos that not only look beautiful but also evoke the true essence of the people in them, making each experience unforgettable!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been staying true to myself and my approach to photography. I focus on making people feel comfortable and confident during their sessions, which helps them open up and allows for more authentic, natural moments to shine through. I believe in always starting with my clients’ vision, listening to what they want, and then enhancing that vision rather than overstepping or making it about my own style. This collaborative approach builds trust and ensures that every session is a reflection of the clients’ personalities, which in turn leads to a loyal and growing clientele.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is knowing that I have the ability to capture memories that will last a lifetime. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about photographing special moments and seeing the emotions people experience when they look back at those images. It’s such a privilege to know that my work is preserving memories that mean so much to my clients. I also love the freedom to experiment and have fun with my photography, especially with self-portraits. It gives me the opportunity to push my creative boundaries and explore new ideas, which keeps me inspired and constantly evolving as an artist.
