Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janelle Blake. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I’ve always wanted to be in the performing arts since I was very young but it is not a traditional path. So, I believe the kindest thing anyone has done for me was to keep believing in my dream and speaking life into me when I didn’t believe in myself. That belief gave me encouragement to keep striving.

Janelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Let me introduce myself. My name is Janelle Blake. I’m an actress and writer currently living in LA. I started off modeling and doing commercials while studying at conservatory and taking improv classes. Eventually, I started to grow frustrated with the auditioning process and began writing my own projects. My first project is now in pre-production, slated to start shooting early October. I have another two scripts in the works as well. I’m very proud of this project. It’s my very first script. It was received very well so I decided that I was going to produce it and get it made. It hasn’t been easy but it’s been worth it!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Oh man. I wish I would have known about grants and scholarships for film makers. There are so many competitions and organizations looking for talented up and coming writers, directors, etc.,that will help fund your film. I was unaware when I first began my project but I will definitely utilize those resources in the future but with that being said, raising money by crowdfunding is humbling and exciting. There is no better feeling than setting a goal and then reaching it. It’s awesome!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, my mission is to bring stories about people of color that appeal to everyone. The same stories that made me laugh and cry when I was growing up but with some extra melanin. I think the industry is ready for something new and fresh and I’m taking that challenge head on.
