We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Janell Borrero Pena. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Janell below.
Janell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most meaningful project has been writing the book Loving a BiPolar Bear. I wrote this book because I wanted others who have gone through or are going through taking care of their loved one who is battling or battled mental illness to know that they are not alone.
My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover the affects that mental illness has on loved ones, giving you a better understanding and empathy for those who struggle. I want you to see this book as an opportunity to understand the emotions that come along with mental illness, escape from misunderstanding and stigma, and learn alongside me about the importance of putting yourself first.
Janell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Janell Borrero Peña is an Entrepreneur. She currently owns her own Accounting Firm, JBP Accounting Inc. She is a proud mommy to a four legged baby, a French Bulldog, named Bam Bam.
Janell wrote this book because she felt it was time to face all that has happened to her in the past. She began writing as a form of healing but decided to share her story with others so they know that they are not alone in their journey. Janell wrote transparently so people can understand how difficult it can be learning and loving someone with a mental illness with battling their own emotions.
Janell enjoys being outdoors surrounding herself with nature. She has such a fanatic of searching for different street art even if it leads her to different cities and different states. She is all about creating long lasting memories with the most important people in her life.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Loving a BiPolar Bear speaks to children and spouses who want to grapple with a parent and/or partner in a new way.
Ultimately, I hope that Loving a BiPolar Bear inspires reflection and fruitful dialogue, pressing into engaging questions like:
How can you put yourself first without feeling guilty?
How can someone not allow the affects of mental illness deter them from achieving their own personal goals?
In the society so big on social media, how can you avoid reading, hearing, or seeing actions that can possibly trigger an episode?
I really look forward to exploring these questions and beyond with my readers. Coming together and discussing mental health will change us all for the better.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In this book, you’ll encounter multifaceted dimensions of emotions and actions that were taken through narratives like: Birthday Punches – My mother tried to stop me from going out and getting a job with false accusations and physical force. I dealt with her actions, hid my emotions, and still went to accomplish my goal.
Overdose – My ex-husband took more prescription drugs than he should have and put himself and others in danger. I received a call while I was at work so I had to make a quick decision of what to do next without putting my job at risk.
Punishment — My actions based off of the resentment I had for others put me in a bad predicament in life. If I didn’t take the correct route it could have possibly resulted in the loss of my own life. I had to do everything possible to not let that happen.
You will love this book if you are looking to read a very transparent version of what it is like to love someone with mental illness but also despise them for actions that they cannot control.
Writing this book was reliving and healing from the past. The resilience of being able to tell my story with many people and still have a positive mindset throughout life.
