Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janell Jermon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janell, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Before Kultured Kurlz got its name, it was originally named 4Curlz. Two years after building brand awareness under 4Curlz, I began the trademark process and discovered that another hair company had been using the same name. As I began to think about new names, I thought about how I could keep the new name similar to the old name so I would not lose brand awareness. I wanted to keep “Curlz”, but I knew the name needed something that represented the natural hair community. I prayed about it and after a few days, Kultured Kurlz came to mind. At first, I was not confident about the name change, but it eventually grew on me.
Janell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Kultured Kurlz is a lifestyle hair care brand formulated exclusively for dry and coarse hair textures; also known as type 4 hair. I started Kultured Kurlz out of my own need for hair care products that moisturize, strengthen, and add shine to my hair. Our products help customers retain moisture and keep their scalps nourished. What sets Kultured Kurlz apart from our competitors is that we focus exclusively on type 4 hair and being a type 4 natural, helps me understand the pain points that my audience has; and having that relatability makes formulating effective products simpler. Not only does Kultured Kurlz provide hair care products, we also provide practical healthy hair tips and advice through our blog page. After being in business for almost 3 years, I am most proud of my determination to keep going, I honestly did not know I had this much ambition. There have been many times when I wanted to throw in the towel and go back to a “normal” life. However, remembering God’s promises and reflecting on Kultured Kurlz’s mission is what keeps me going every time I have doubts.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
What has worked well for me is having Kultured Kurlz on multiple social platforms and developing an SEO strategy. The age of our target audience is broad, so it is important to know which social media platforms each age group spends their time on. By expanding Kultured Kurlz’s online presence onto each platform my audience uses, I can capture each group’s attention. By having an SEO strategy in place, we have been able to use short and long-tail keywords that customers are most likely to use, which then draws them to our website and social media pages.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Giving great customer service to my existing, new, and potential customers makes a difference in how they engage with Kultured Kurlz. A positive experience with me and the hair products keeps them coming back and has led to referrals.
