Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janell Hearns . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janell , appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Years ago, I was offered a job which at the time was one of my first in breaking into the field. I was so eager and at the same time afraid to lose the opportunity, that when I received the offer I took it right away without negotiating salary or any other details. That became a move that I instantly regret. No matter how hard you work or how great of an employee you are, it is very difficult to renegotiate the salary of a job you’ve already accepted less for. The lesson I learned from that experience was that it is my responsibility to KNOW my worth and also to never make decisions out of fear or desperation. What is for you is for you.
Janell , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Detroit-born DJ, Television/Digital Producer, and Storyteller. I utilize my passion for the arts as a tool to curate digital media/content for brands and the perfect soundtrack for events.
I have worked for years with the local NBC affiliate here in Detroit as a a freelance producer. For the last several years I’ve worked as a producer writing and creating commercials and long and short form videos for businesses. I am also the owner of my own media company, The Legendary Movement Media group.
As a DJ I have had the awesome opportunity to work with the Detroit Pistons, brands like The Distinct Life, Footlocker and Barcardi as well as impactful organizations like The Sean Anderson Foundation, DCipher and educational institutions like Oakland University.
One of the things that makes me the most proud is that I am using gifts that God has given me to create the life and career that I desire. It’s very important to me that I don’t allow others to put me in a box.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly the best source of new clientele for me is always word of mouth. Showing up and doing a great job/ being professional and passionate about your craft goes a long way.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Creatives often get judged based on negative experiences that a client had in the past. So I do my very best to under promise and over deliver in every aspect of business. DJs tend to have a reputation of showing up late so I make it a point to show up early. With my production clients I like to have deliverables ready several days before the due date. Giving clients confidence in my abilities and removing doubt and anxiety has been great for my reputation. Good communication is the key to everything.
