We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janel Nichole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
“Sometimes you have to risk everything for a vision only you can see.” The biggest risk I ever took was leaving my full time 9-5 to put my all into my business. It was a very scary thing, I’ll admit. I remember how I felt leading up to the decision. I went back and forth asking myself was I ready and would this be the right thing to do. After sitting on this idea for awhile, I had to realize there was no such thing as the “perfect time”. If I continued to wait on the perfect time I would be waiting forever! What ultimately pushed me into taking this risk was the demand of my business and not being able to keep up. I was limited to what I could do within my brand because I had a job I was dedicating majority of my time to. I remember telling myself at one point, “Janel you’re giving 40 hours to someone else’s dream/vision when you could be giving the same to yours” That really put things into perspective for me. I had a coworker tell me as I was preparing to make this decision, “Janel don’t let fear get in the way of faith” and that stuck with me. I had to step out on faith! Better yet I had to leap out on faith! That one risk changed my whole life. Here I am now, going into my 4th year of business as a full time business owner.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the CEO and owner of Diamond Effect by JNichole. Diamond Effect by JNichole launched in September of 2018. I’m a wig maven, wig instructor, and business mentor. I am known for making wigs in under 15 minutes and having one of the best selling hair products, The Ultimate Silk and Thermal shield. I’ve been able to create and ship hundreds of wigs to all over the country. My online academy, The Wiganomics Institute has been able to educate students from all over the world. From the United Kingdom, Canada, the Bahamas and more! I really enjoy educating others on how to make wigs on the sewing machine. It’s a blessing to be able to share my gift with others on a daily and making women feel beautifu!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2019 just a month after I left my full time job, I found out I was pregnant. This moment really shifted things for me. I thought to myself “Did I make the right decision by leaving my full time job?” and “Would this be it for my business?” I had to pivot. I couldn’t focus only on becoming a first time, around the clock business owner but I also had to focus on becoming a first time mom. This was a lot to take in at one time! For the first time I felt like everything was coming at me fast. Yet in that moment, still then, I had to remember that I could do this! I couldn’t let fear get in the way of faith!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my social media presence took time. I literally had to show up for my brand day in and day out. By that, meaning I had to be consistent! I would post 3 times a day on Instagram, post on my story and go live occasionally. Going live was a big thing for me. I really had to be pushed out of my comfort zone. Honestly, going live is what really helped me the most with my social media presence. It allowed my followers to get to know me on a different level. My best advice would be to ease your way into everything. If you aren’t comfortable with putting the camera on your face going live, place the camera on something different. Example, I would sometimes just put the camera on my hands while I was styling a wig. My audience could not only ask me questions but also see me working in action.
