We recently connected with Janel Kilnisan and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Janel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I had a near death experience in my mid twenties that really put my life into perspective. I knew I always loved photography and had alway pursued it and studied it since high school as I was in college I worked bartending jobs to get me through school . But once I had my near death experience that left me in a wheelchair for a year . I realized that life is too short and I didn’t want to spend any more of my time doing other jobs while studying. I had already gotten my A.A the year before the accident in art and art education . And decided to go get my BFA and then pursue a career as a photographer. I worked a few years for other photographers and then finally decided to work solely for myself in 2016 .

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, I’m Janel, a wild-hearted photographer born and raised in Miami. My passion lies in capturing life’s fleeting, whimsical moments and wrapping them in a romantic haze. Through my lens, I celebrate unique individuals, focusing on raw emotions and authentic experiences. I find beauty in the everyday, transforming even the most ordinary scenes into something magical.
I’m all about the wild spirit—hands dirty, heart open, laughing from your soul. You’re looking for a photographer who will guide you, but also let you be yourself and have fun during the session. I seek out the sparkle of wanderlust in your eyes and a spirit that dances to its own melody. You want a photographer who can catch those fleeting moments that truly define you.
And above all, I’m about connection—capturing hands entwined, souls meeting with just a glance, and laughter that resonates in the very fiber of your being. You’re seeking someone who can immortalize those intimate ties that make your story timeless.
When I’m not behind the camera, I’m embracing the beautiful chaos of motherhood with my two spirited girls, who constantly remind me of the magic in life’s simplest moments. Their energy and spontaneity inspire my work, helping me capture the kind of joy, love, and spontaneity that can be easily missed in the rush of everyday life.
What sets me apart is my ability to create an environment where you feel completely at ease. I don’t just take photos—I craft an experience that allows you to be authentically yourself, bringing out the raw and candid moments that make you shine. For entrepreneurs, business owners, and dreamers, I capture the essence of your brand in a way that is genuine and powerful.
Photography to me is about more than just images; it’s about telling your story through light, shadows, and emotion. If you’re ready to turn your fleeting moments into timeless keepsakes filled with whimsy and authenticity, I’d be honored to help you preserve those memories.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is the ability to bring unique ideas to life and share them with others. Watching my vision take shape and resonate with an audience is incredibly fulfilling. It allows me to express myself, approach challenges with fresh perspectives, and connect with people on a deeper level. There’s something special about being able to tell a story through my work—capturing a moment and preserving it for a lifetime.
For me, the most meaningful part of my work is collaborating with women, moms, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. Being able to support them and reflect their true essence through my photography is truly rewarding. It’s not just about taking photos, but about working together to create something beautiful and authentic—something that resonates and feels deeply personal.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
First and foremost, fair compensation is crucial. It’s disheartening how often artists are undervalued, despite the immense effort, creativity, and passion they put into their work. We need more people to recognize the value of what artists contribute and ensure they are properly compensated. This includes protecting intellectual property rights and creating opportunities for equitable income.
Equally important is community engagement. It’s essential to foster a culture that values the arts and encourages local communities to actively support and participate in creative endeavors. When communities are engaged, the arts can truly flourish.
Lastly, collaboration opportunities should be a priority. Encouraging partnerships between artists, businesses, and other sectors can spark innovative projects and open new avenues for creative expression.
By focusing on these areas, society can build a more robust and supportive environment where artists and creatives can thrive.
