Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janee Hunter . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
The first time I ever earned money from doing nails I was 12 years old. In middle school I was known for always having my nails done, so I would get compliments often. I remember at that time I was changing my nails daily, it got to the point where my parents didn’t allow me to do so indoors. At the time, I had a friend named Stephanie who asked me to do her nails. I was so nervous because up until then I had only ever done family. I of course had to ask for permission from my parents for her to come over, and for me to be able to do nails inside. When I was told yes I immediately began to brainstorm what I was going to do. After school that day we both walked to my house and I started on her nails immediately. This was before we had all the technology now so this took hours for me to do a red polish with cheetah print. It’s crazy I even remember the design. Once I finished she paid me a couple of dollars and I remember being astonished. It felt surreal.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a licensed mobile nail technician, meaning that I’ll travel to my clients and service them in the comfort of their own home. I truly love what I do because I have been able to create my own lane in the nail industry for my clients and those who are inspired to do so. My specialty is hand drawn nail art. I truly love zoning out and creating eclectic nails that no one else has seen. I love that the clients who come to me or find me via social media desire to express themselves on their nails. I’ve always seen nails as a way to introduce yourself without talking. Nails tell you more about a person than you’d realize. I truly feel honored that those who find me choose to trust me to carry out their vision.
I think that is what I’m most proud of, I deliver exactly what my clients ask for and exceed their expectations.
That is what I want potential clients to know, when you book me it won’t be a situation where you asked for one thing and leave disappointed. Each set of nails I do, I start as if I was the client and only deliver nails I personally would be proud to wear. The hours I put into each set are done with love.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media prescience truly by accident. I remember just sharing my daily thoughts and feelings as I felt them on my Snapchat and realizing people actually cared or were entertained by what I had to say. I think it was then when I realized that I had the ability to share my talents in the same way and people would respond, interact and even book off the strength of my personality. Advice I’d give someone on building a presence is to be authentic, speak as if you were speaking to a friend and let It flow naturally. People can tell when it’s not authentic. Everyone is trying to fit an aesthetic when the truth is, YOU are what draws people in and no one else can bring the perspective you have.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Honestly, society can pay creatives their worth. It is as simple as that. I feel that most of what deters creatives from continuing is it overall lack of fair compensation. Artists and creatives are becoming more transparent with what they are being paid and I love that! This opening up of the conversation surrounding pay is what inspires more to tap in and that is what keeps an ecosystem of creatives alive.
