We recently connected with Janée Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Janée, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have always loved working with children and discovered my passion for teaching about 10+ years ago while volunteering as an assistant teacher in a 2nd grade classroom. It was something I loved about seeing a child understand something new that I taught them. I was in awe of how I could be a part of a child’s growth without having any children of my own yet. After a year of volunteering in the classroom and a couple years as an academic coach, I decided to go back to school to get my Masters in Teaching with a focus in math and science. I did it and started “officially” teaching in my own classroom!
After 5 years of teaching, I decided I wanted more control over my time and freedom to pour into children the way I wanted to. I knew my impact as an educator could reach children better in a one-on-one or small group setting focused solely on the scholars’ needs. So I left the classroom to pursue my dream of being an entrepreneur. That’s when Brownie Bunch Tutoring, LLC was founded in March 2023.
Brownie Bunch Tutoring’s mission is to provide high-quality, individualized math and/or science tutoring services for kindergarten – 8th grade scholars. We use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) instruction to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. We approach each scholar’s unique needs, creating a supportive and encouraging environment that encourages confidence and academic success.
Janée, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Janée Brown and I am a full time entrepreneur who owns two businesses. Today, I will focus on one of my businesses- Brownie Bunch Tutoring, LLC. Brownie Bunch Tutoring was founded in March 2023 from my passion of teaching. I was teaching in the classroom at the time and wanted to expand my expertise into something more impactful for scholars. I was able to see the need for education outside of the classroom environment and I knew I could provide a unique experience catered to them.
I offer a 12 week STEAM(science, technology, engineering, arts and math) tutoring program designed for kindergarten through eighth grade scholars which focuses on increasing their fluency, critical thinking and problem solving skills in math and/or science. Each scholar receives an individualized learning plan specific to their needs and parents receive growth reports every month throughout the process. Not only do I provide tutoring services to those that may be struggling in math and/or science, tutoring is available to scholars who want to excel beyond what is being taught in the classroom.
Brownie Bunch Tutoring helps parents who want to help their scholars academically at home and don’t know where to start. With my love for children, a flexible schedule, knowledge in math/science, and creative lessons, I guarantee that any tutee I work with will grow confidence academically. I am most proud when not only I can see the positive impact I have on scholars throughout their time tutoring, but the scholars and parents see it as well. Teamwork is essential for success.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
If someone were to ask me when I was younger what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer would be, “A pediatrician!”. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to work with children in some capacity and loved the idea of being in the medical field. By the time I got to college, I decided I wanted to be a pediatric physician assistant(PA) instead, so I majored in biology with a minor in chemistry with the hopes of getting into a PA program when I graduated. Once I graduated and moved back home to apply for PA programs, I quickly realized that was not the route for me. I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do career wise, so I was in and out of jobs for a year until I started discovering my passion for teaching. Teaching had never been a thought until I started volunteering at AmeriCorps as a teacher’s assistant for a year. I then became an academic coach at an afterschool program. During my time there, I decided that I wanted to go back to school to become a teacher. I received my Masters in Teaching and officially became a teacher. After 5 years of teaching, I knew I wanted to impact children in a more personal way so that’s when Brownie Bunch Tutoring was founded. I soon left teaching and went into full time entrepreneurship.
To sum everything up, I’ve had to pivot so many times in my adulthood when it came to my career. Through perseverance and faith, I have been able to get to the place I am today. I am a successful and confident business owner.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients at the moment is word of mouth. The testimony of parents to other parents has to be the biggest compliment in the world. The fact that they trusted me to work with their child and spread the word to others is amazing. This shows that what I’m doing is needed and impactful. I do want to expand my source of clients to larger audiences but I know that takes time as a fairly new business.
