Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jane Gottlieb. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jane Gottlieb, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that a positive attitude helps with becoming successful. I also feel you have to work at your art every day forever…..even if your are just thinking about it. I also feel that everything you do cannot be a masterpiece. I think it takes years to really gain the confidence to make yourself happy first & foremost.

Jane Gottlieb, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been expressing my joy of art with paint, shapes and colors
since I was very young. I started as a painter, evolved into a photographer, and eventually began hand-painting on my Cibachrome
prints over 35 years ago. Before Photoshop I found a way to express
a new magical reality with the vivid, saturated and unrealistic colors
I painted into each photographic print..
For the past 35 years I have been scanning my one-of-a-kind hand-painted prints and my library of 35mm Kodachrome color transparencies taken over the last 45 years. I love to paint, combine and enhance them with Photoshop, creating my own beautiful idyllic world!
My art has been shown worldwide in many solo exhibitions including:
Butler Institute of American Art, Ohio; Carnegie Art Museum, Oxnard, CA; Laguna Art Museum, CA; Petersen Automotive Museum, LA, CA;
LA County Natural History Museum, CA; Monterey Museum of Art, CA; Nancy Hoffman Gallery, NYC, NY; L’Image Gallery, Rome, Italy; Louis Stern Gallery, West Hollywood, CA; Wall Space, Santa Barbara, CA.
I have also been included in countless group exhibits and Art Fairs around the world over the last 30 years, and collected by museums, foundations, corporations and individuals worldwide. Numerous magazine articles,
magazine and book covers, two museum exhibition catalogues and
two books have been published of my art, Garden Tales and Car Tales.
Recently I have had the honor of being asked to install my art in many wonderful public spaces:
I installed more than 70 large art works at the UCLA Law Library and UCLA Anderson School of Management,
including a 5’x10′ commissioned piece.
I installed 20 new very large artworks printed on aluminum at the UCSB Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.
I created the First Vertical Art Gallery at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health:
I have just installed 15 more large artworks at the UCLA Young Graduate Library, in a huge first floor study hall!
In 2018 I had a 4 month exhibition entitles “Jane Gottlieb Photographs France” at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UCSB!!
I recently was commissioned by the UCSB Library to create a huge 16’ square artwork of the Library!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I spend a lot of time alone, either taking photos or enhancing them with photoshop. Consequently I really enjoy my many art openings where everyone is very happy & complimentary.
Everyone loves my art & I love hearing about it!
I donate my artworks to many charities, put them on walls in friend’s offices, & give them to my friends.
I get messages & pictures all the time telling me how much they love living with my art.
That’s so rewarding & makes me really happy!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I started my creative journey over 50 years ago. That’s way before the internet! So I had to mail everything to galleries & museums. I spent a lot of time making packages with duplicate slides, articles, a museum catalogue & a letter. It took so much time & money to do that & the amount of nothing happening as a result was staggering. I persevered & never stopped hustling my art. I would go to NYC every year for a month & show my art a million times. I got some success as I continued to pursue my dreams. I was so ready for photoshop & the internet! I love being able to send a wonderful presentation out to many galleries, museums, friends, etc. The internet makes being an artist so much easier than in the “old days”. I am so happy as my reputation is now world wide. I have had shows in Rome, Basel, Milan, Lisbon, Bordeaux, Paris & London because of the internet. I love all the art & photography sites I look at daily….I love getting all the positive feedback on Facebook, Instagram & LinkedIn!
I feel very lucky to be at this wonderful stage of my career. Through the ups and downs it’s been exciting, difficult, challenging and so rewarding!!
