We recently connected with Jane Dye and have shared our conversation below.
Jane, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Early in my career as a registered nurse working in large hospital-based medical centers in psychiatry, I decided to take the risk of leaving that environment to work in preventive medicine with a private company. This was a life-changing event as it was what eventually led me to start my own business to offer private health and wellness coaching programs nationwide.
I always wanted to work in preventive medicine but, there were limited opportunities to do so as a young nurse. I was frustrated that the care model was more focused on illness than prevention but, never lost the desire to make that change for the right opportunity. I shared my desire with colleagues who were willing to listen and asked for their help if they were to hear of any professional work I could potentially pursue.
After speaking on a break with a coworker one day she called me that evening to tell me she heard of a national company that was looking for an RN who wanted to be the clinical nurse in my area at a medically supervised weight and risk factor program. When I found out that the program had a behavioral component that would address lifestyle along with diet modification, I knew that was the time to schedule an interview. I did so at the earliest opportunity a week later and then soon after took the position. My role was to provide direct medical care along with the medical directors for patients throughout their intake to completion of their programs. However, with my behavioral medicine background, I knew I had to understand the behavioral program to support patient success.
So, when the behavioral medicine department held a training, I made sure that I was in attendance even though it required me to take time off without pay for the experience since it was not provided to nursing staff.
The training was an amazing experience as I was learning from professionals who were on the cutting edge of science at that time. I left knowing that I wanted to be as supportive to the staff and patients in coordinating care for the best outcomes.
What I didn’t know was that I was the only nurse in the company to attend under the circumstances and the presenters took note. That would lead to an opportunity later to work with those professionals as a partner in a start-up company that I was invited to join from day one. Based on my dedication and knowledge I became the Director of Nursing and Medical Training for the company where I was able to work with patients directly in clinic settings, provide training to colleagues and, be a presenter at most of our medical conferences throughout the US. I also worked directly with our medical directors to create clinical policies and procedures. It was an extraordinary experience.
However, my personal and family responsibilities required a change after years in that position but, it never dulled my desire to return to preventive and wellness-oriented patient care.
That’s when another colleague suggested I become a certified holistic health coach. She insisted I was the perfect person for this new direction in health and wellness. I didn’t even know that was an option at that time as it was an emerging profession. Changing the paradigm of how I would work was a huge risk.
After my initial certification, I leaped to open my own business, Precedo Incorporated, and began seeing clients in private individualized programs. I had finally arrived where I always wanted to be as I could help women and men create greater health and happiness by making simple, easy, and sustainable diet and lifestyle changes.
It has always been an honor and privilege to have my clients entrust their dreams and goals to me. They credit our coaching experience with changing their lives to create more joy and freedom so that they could pursue their best life with more energy and vitality. To know I was able to facilitate that change for my clients nationwide (including my husband, sister, and children) is beyond words.
I went on to complete multiple other coaching training programs and certifications to broaden and deepen my ability to provide the knowledge, insights, support, and accountability to help my clients achieve outstanding results.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My passion for health and wellness finds its roots in so many places. I am a wife, a mother, and a human being developing constantly, as well as a 30-year professional nurse, and the former Senior Vice President of the Charleston Metro Holistic Chamber of Commerce. In all of that time, I have been honing the practices for health and wellness in my life, the lives of my family, and clients.
I combine 30 years of nursing, professional medical expertise, and knowledge, with extensive training, development, and research into nutrition, alternative health strategies, and ancient wisdom of the mind, body, and soul connection. This subject matter expertise is blended with a dedication to maximizing human performance and extensive experience in coaching techniques. Beyond the things I have learned, I am always seeking out the newest information, vetting it, researching it, and helping my clients to implement it, as well as implementing it in my practice and life.
I seek to help high-performing professionals find balance in their lives through health in all of its aspects (mental, physical, and spiritual). My programs are designed to focus on building the sustainable change for maximum performance. The programs have been perfected over the years and executed not only with professionals from all different fields but also with members of my own family; including my husband Chris, a high-performing sales professional. This isn’t something I have developed outside of myself, but the same techniques I use in my life and my world.
My professional coaching certifications come from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Holistic MBA-Health Coach Institute’s Transformational Coaching Method, and Intuitive Intelligence Academy. I’m trained in innovative coaching methods, practical lifestyle management techniques, and over 100 dietary theories, concepts, and methodologies including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), cutting-edge psychology, family systems work, neuroscience, heart science, ancient wisdom, and spirituality. And I’m currently enrolled in learning the Silva Ultramind System.
I’m the former Director of Nursing and Medical Training for Health Management Resources, a national healthcare leader in the field of prevention and wellness, where I was able to work with nurses and doctors throughout the United States to present medical concepts and innovative practices to hospitals and large medical group practices. I assisted in establishing and implementing medically supervised health and wellness programs.
I’m also a Board Certified and Accredited Member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP).
My approach to health is holistic; meaning that I understand all areas of your life are connected and so I look to all of them as we approach your transformation. If you are not physically healthy, your mental and spiritual health will suffer. The same is true for the mental and spiritual aspects of your life as well. I do not dwell on restrictions and negation. Instead, my approach seeks to fill your life with the bountiful and healthy, leaving less room for the things hurting you, without you having to restrict away everything on day one. Our goal is a healthy life, not just a good workout routine or a diet, and a healthy life is a wonderful thing to live.
Part of what makes the process of improving our health so daunting is that it seems very complex. In reality, success isn’t complicated at all. It doesn’t require massive changes to diet, plans to train for a marathon, or a sudden change in all areas of your lifestyle. I believe that successful transformation for your health, in all of its facets, is based on sustainable, practical, incremental change.
If you want to eat better, add one leafy green per day. Simple, sustainable, and practical. On the surface, it feels like such a small change that there is no way it can have an impact. However, it becomes clear very quickly that when we develop complex, overwhelming strategies for changing our lifestyles, we quickly become frustrated and return to old habits. This is made even worse by the fact that we now feel defeated and believe that our health is in a static state, cannot be impacted, and so we accept poor health with resigned dissatisfaction.
Whether your change is physical, mental, or spiritual it should be simple, sustainable, and practical. Utilizing these core characteristics and in partnership with my clients, I can pinpoint changes that you will also enjoy. Once all four of those characteristics have been met, you have change that will stick.
These small changes may not seem like much, but they become individual building blocks that will quickly assemble themselves into total health and wellness transformation. Simply put; instead of trying to build a healthy structure from one solid piece of material, constantly chipping away, shaping, restricting, and struggling, we are assembling the individual pieces into what will be a much stronger, and happier, structure.
Simple concepts like “crowding out” unhealthy foods with healthy foods and “deconstructing craving” to understand their meanings will quickly lead to a total transformation that not only occurs but sticks throughout your life.
My philosophy of care is big issues require small changes and small changes will take care of big issues. I have found that when you help someone see their world differently, their world changes so they show up differently and create results that may have seemed unimaginable or impossible.
To begin the coaching process I offer a free 50-minute initial consultation to dive deep into what the client desires for their health and life.
Coaching is life-changing. As a coach, I have to create a powerful coaching experience to help people handle their challenges and I love that. Yet, someone considering a coaching relationship has to be ready to make the commitment and investment to do it. It has to be a great fit for us to coach together. It has to be an absolute yes. That means I have to always be appreciative that yes lives in the land of no and not be discouraged moving forward.
Once we’ve mutually decided we’re a good fit for coaching, clients can choose from 3 individualized programs providing varying levels of support as we both agree is the best option. Clients can choose to continue coaching after completing their original program for ongoing support and guidance to further uplevel their desired outcomes.
What I am most proud of is what my clients have shared about the amazing transformations they have experienced through the coaching process and the relationships we share as a result. Knowing that I can help empower my clients to make the change they want is wonderful.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been referrals from clients and speaking engagements. In general, create my ideal clients one conversation at a time. However, I do maintain a social media presence on many platforms to connect me to a wider audience.
I have been interviewed on a variety of national and international radio shows, and podcasts and collaborated on YouTube videos in collaboration with a nationally known mental health speaker and advocate for mental wellness with inclusion and diversity for universities, colleges, and national companies.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The book that guides my practice is The Prosperous Coach by Steve Chandler and Rich Litvin. I continue to use other videos, essays, and newsletters resources they offer regularly.
Other resources which have been invaluable to me are from all of my mentors and coaches in which I participated in their certification programs.
There are many professionals who have guided my thinking and philosophy in coaching which includes books and essays from Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger, Dr. Kara Fitzgeral, Michael A. Singer, Gary John Bishop, Dr. Brené Brown, and more.
