Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jane Charles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jane, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
SOLD This is a feature film with Gillian Anderson that we filmed in India and Nepal, based on the YA novel of the same name by Patricia McCormick. Lakshmi, a young girl from Nepal, is sold to a trafficker and brought to a brothel in India. We see this brothel community through her eyes, the abuse and captivity, and then we see how she grows stronger and plots her escape. As we made this film, a group of us in Seattle co-founded a non-profit www.stolenyouth.org to end child trafficking in Washington State. StolenYouth is now in it’s 12th year and have helped countless survivors as well as implemented some great preventative programs. Jeffrey Brown, the writer/director, and I were invited to speak at the UN, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum and the Thompson Reuters Trust Conference in London. The film is in global distribution and is being shown in villages in India and Nepal by non-profit groups. Donations to our impact campaign have been granted to non-profits on the ground in India and Nepal.
and…
We have just finished filming, The Fast Runner, a short film by David Bercovici, about a young girl who helps save the Rabbi of her community in 1942, during the Holocaust. This film is timely and will be in the festival circuit in 2024, as well as shown in schools and museums to educate about the Holocaust and hate crimes. We need more love and acceptance in the world right now.
Jane, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always loved films and credit my mother with introducing me to her favorite films from her era as well as allowing me to stay up late on school nights to watch films I really wanted to see. Growing up in Upstate NY, I would often take the train to see musicals and plays in New York City and still love to see works on the stage. In college I did some acting and realized that my true passion was helping stage the shows and support the actors in their work. During school, I moved to LA with a work friend and, while still in school for communications, started helping fellow students with their short films.
I moved to Vancouver BC just before the big boom and while the film industry was rapidly growing. Working at a local cable station, I paid my dues as a locations and AD Production Assistant(PA) and did my 120 days on set to join the Directors Guild if Canada. I worked as a PA, then Assistant Director, for a few years and then took a job at a local production company, Shane Lunny Productions(SLP), as an assistant producer. While there, I began production managing and eventually producing projects from script to delivery, had the privilege of overseeing all aspects of filmmaking and learned about script development as well as post production, valued end-to-end experience that is not available to you when you work on set every day.
After working full time for several years at SLP, I went freelance and produced commercials with great directors, music videos(Sting, Harry Connick Jr, Our Lady Peace) and eventually feature films. I ran production companies in Vancouver(Apple Box Productions, Run Spot Run Films), optioned books and developed film projects. My first feature films premiered at The Toronto and Montreal Films Festivals.
In 2004, I met and married my husband, Marco, and moved to Seattle, where I’ve produced several independent feature films and a series with MTV. A new working partnership in 2020, during the pandemic, with veteran and prolific producer Dan Angel, has given me the opportunity to produce movies, TV and feature films in my beloved British Columbia. We have over 250 family and inspirational book titles in the Fezziwig Studios library and recently completed Rescued by Ruby, about a shelter dog that is rescued to become a police K9 dog that performs a miraculous rescue and have several projects in development with Netflix, SONY and Warner Brothers.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Mentorship. If I could go back in time, I would search out and connect with female producers and ask to learn from them. I’m heartened to see so many women in the industry supporting each other now and more women having opportunities to write, direct, produce and lead projects. I admired so many strong women in the industry over the years but didn’t trust my creative instincts and leadership abilities until much later in my career.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
After working for years helping others achieve their creative goals and producing projects that were strictly entertainment(and learning so much along the way), I am committed to producing stories that bring light and hope to the world. There is so much fear and darkness out there these days that I feel people need to see film and TV that demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit and shows the value of community, connection and supporting each other with intention, commitment and love.
