We were lucky to catch up with Jande Laulu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jande , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of my most special projects is my birth flower prints. These unique pieces celebrate families by showcasing each member’s birth month flower, creating a personalized design that includes everyone. Many customers have used these prints as memorials or birth announcements, and I’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible feedback. So many five-star reviews and heartfelt stories about how much these pieces mean to people.
And this almost didn’t happen. I had many doubts, distractions, countless edits, and kept setting it aside for nearly a year. But the day I finally hit publish, it took off. I sold hundreds within just a few hours. That moment felt like the project’s time to bloom, and it’s been my best-seller since 2019.
Now, I offer several versions and styles of the birth flower prints, and I love how they’ve become cherished keepsakes for people of all ages and occasions. As someone obsessed with flowers, creating personalized floral art has been a dream come true and a huge win for my business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an artist, maker, and special needs mom, so the in the beginning this passion was prompted by my personal life. When my son was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old, I realized I needed a flexible career that would allow me to be present for him while also supporting my family. I’ve always been a creative person, I loved drawing as a child, crafting and painting murals as a young adult, and dreamed of becoming an illustrator. Building a home-based art business felt like the perfect way to combine my passions with my responsibilities.
My business specializes in creating personalized and positive art, my birth flower prints being one of my most loved products. These unique pieces tell the story of families through art, celebrating connections and honoring special moments.
What makes my work truly stand out is the heart and thoughtfulness I put into every piece. Each creation is designed to feel deeply personal, whether it’s a keepsake that honors a loved one, a fun and interactive card that spreads joy, or a coloring page that encourages creativity and relaxation.
I’ve discovered my niche in the market: a demand for connection and positivity through art. My style focuses on florals, color, with an added personalized story. Making meaningful pieces that are affordable yet one-of-a-kind, filling a gap for those who want something truly special on a budget is important to me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In my personal life, I became the sole provider and a single parent to a child who requires a lot of attention just a few years after starting my creative business. The pressure to succeed was immense and I had to completely redefine everything I thought I knew about motherhood with an autistic child. When my ex-husband remarried, it brought a new, loving family into my son’s life. It felt like his support team grew, and with that came a sense of relief and gratitude. Knowing he has more people in his corner who truly want the best for him has been one of the unexpected joys of our co-parenting journey.
Over the years, my business has faced its fair share of challenges, mistakes, setbacks, and many moments of doubt. Despite that, 2022 became my most successful year, and I was finally on the path to scaling my business and reaching my big goals. 2023 started strong, but then came an unexpected and devastating hit. A long-standing partnership, one I had worked with for 13 years, closed overnight without notice. Not only did they fail to pay for a month of past work, but I also lost my main source of future revenue.
It was a huge setback. I had to pause my plans for expansion and completely rethink my business strategy, products, income streams, and focus on building new partnerships.
These experiences have taught me that setbacks can be opportunities to refine and refocus and build something even bigger.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a special needs mom, my big-picture dream is to build a successful company that offers flexible and meaningful employment for parents of special needs children and autistic adults. I envision a space where everyone feels valued, included, and inspired.
My next step is to expand my print and stationery business into a large-scale operation. Building a team- providing a sense of belonging, income, education, and creative opportunities.
