We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jandé a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jandé, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on by far has to be my debut album “Face the Facts,” that I dropped in 2020. This project is important to me for sooo many reasons. Let’s start with the fact that I finished the album and dropped it in the middle of a freaking Pandemic. I personally know a lot of people that were struggling financially as well as mentally, but I was blessed enough to use that time to reflect and create. And just really hammer down and finish it. Secondly, this was my first body of work that I fully invested in. These were my stories that I wrote. The studio time, the beats that I sat down with producers and made from scratch; I paid for it. I relayed my vision to them and we created something super dope. I was so proud of myself as well as the people that taught me so much throughout the process and supported me. Lastly, I had just dealt with a pretty hard break-up and this was my release, my therapy, and honestly was kept me from sinking into a really negative & dark space. So yesss! I was just grateful to be able to share my stories with others, and whether I know them or not my music connects us!

Jandé, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an artist! I am a singer/songwriter with a slightly unorthodox story. I graduated with my Undergrad and Master’s degree from The Florida State University and was a full-time student athlete in Track & Field. I’ve been opening acts for 90’s R&B group SILK for their 25th Anniversary, as well as R&B singer Angie Stone. I’ve performed background vocals for singer/ songwriter Kipper Jones, who’s written for artists such as Brandy, Vanessa Williams, Chaka Khan, and many more as well as singer/songwriter Kevin Ross. I have music placements on TV series Ambitions, Terror Lake Drive, Bigger, and recently on AMC series 61st Street where I’ve played the role of both a featured singer and songwriter. I had the pleasure of singing National Anthem at the Atlanta Falcons vs. Washington Redskins game August 22, 2019. And I continue to work across the country as a songwriter and vocal arranger for up and coming artists as well as established producers and artists. I had opportunity to be a part of Kanye West’s most recent Album “Donda.” Currently, myself and another Atlanta-based artist Mayah Dyson are preparing for a show here in Atlanta, October 6, 2022 that were really excited about and is going to be amazing!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You need people! Artist and business owners always want to creative this narrative that ” I did it all on my own,” and that’s a quick way to fail and isn’t true. You need resources, you need connections, you need a great support system, if you want sustainability and a successful career. Enough times of wanting to be this strong, independent, Black woman that didn’t need anybody or didn’t want to ask for help, eventually started costing the kid resources. Also, something that took a long time for me to unlearn that still slightly struggle with is… that it’s usually who you least expect and people aren’t obligated to support you. I’m a giver and even though I’m young, I’m old school. So I keep my word and I take what people say to heart and I’ve been disappointed sooo many times and have taken things so personal. And I had to stop doing that, because you end up being sad and neglecting the people that ARE there.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Honestly, I just want to be great, whatever that looks like that’s what I want to be and I don’t want to put limitations on what God can do for my life. I want to be a brand! I don’t want just my music to be associated with me. I do want to sell out stadiums and write legendary music. I want to GIVE; that’s what drives me forreal, forreal. I want to be able to take care of my family, fund businesses, as well as people’s education. Build schools, provide resources, break generational curses, all of that is what drives me.
