Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janak Panchal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janak, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey began as a Photographer before becoming a Cinematographer and Colorist. My father had a camera that I began using from the age of 14 and that is when I became fond of photography. Over time, my mind began falling in love with motion along with stills. I joined Whistling Woods International in Mumbai, India for my Bachelor’s degree where I studied and practiced cinematography. I worked on various projects including short films, music videos and commercials. Post graduation, I shot a music video for Raja Kumari and Raashi Sood called ‘Out of Love’. I moved to Los Angeles to study cinematography at the New York Film Academy. Over my time at NYFA, I learned and improved my skills as a cinematographer and colorist by working on many project and attending various events of Cinematographers and Colorists. The one in particular was my favorite when NYFA hosted Kostas Theodosiou who was the colorist for Oppenheimer. His experiences have helped me gain a lot of knowledge in my journey as a colorist. Furthermore, online resources such as YouTube, books and other various methods have helped me build my skills.
Janak, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Janak Panchal and I’m a Los Angeles based Cinematographer and Colorist with an experience of over 6 years. I’ve developed an extensive experience in shooting and coloring short films, commercials and music videos for a diverse range of clients, including production companies, independent filmmakers, and musicians. A few of the highlights of my work include working as a Cinematographer for the music video ‘Out of Love’ for Raja Kumari and Raashi Sood, working as a Cinematographer for the film ‘Youna’ which won multiple awards including Best Women Film at NCIFF. I also worked on ‘Kryptonite’ which was selected at the Academy Qualifying ‘Heartland’ Film Festival. Recently, the music video ‘Jaan Leva’ I shot for Siddhant Bhosle has been released.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a Cinematographer, being able to tell a story visually and evoke emotions through the power of lensing, framing and lighting is what is the most rewarding aspect. When the audience is able to connect with the visuals and feel the emotions, that is what feels the most rewarding. Also, being able to collaborate with talented directors, producers and creating a beautiful output keeps the heart and mind happy. As a colorist, transforming RAW footage into visually incredible images after collaborating with the Director, the Cinematographer and the Producer is what feels the most rewarding. Seeing the audience experiencing different emotions through the power of color grading is deeply rewarding.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Building and maintaining a strong relationship with the clients is essential for any business to grow and become successful. Staying in contact with them through emails, phone calls and even meeting them in person helps in maintaining a strong relationship. Being able to accommodate last minute revisions or being flexible with the timings help develop a strong bond with them.
