We were lucky to catch up with Janai Buck recently and have shared our conversation below.
Janai, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was a kids I’ve always been into arts. My mom made sure I explored that side of me from acting classes, art competitions, modeling and so much more. I eventually realized I wasn’t a performing artist and more of a behind the scenes. During my acting classes I used to live in wardrobe and doing the cast makeup. I’ve had some portraits of the B&O railroad inside their gift shop. So it’s in me to create and share.

Janai, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a jack of all trades and for me it’s bigger than a business I really love to host people and serve my community so from helping children to re twisting hair it’s in me to see others happy that’s literally my goal. I own businesses and I’m also an upcoming social media influencer. I believe I can do anything I put my mind to and to those that come in my presence I want the same for you!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Limits. I’ve learned there’s no limits to life. From our early years we are taught to be a certain way obtain certain things to be liked or respected but for me to only limit yourself to those things that society said we had to be is sort of a low life way of living. Some people don’t feel like they can live up to those means and maybe because they just don’t want to but who are we as humans to say they’re not good enough and right there is limiting someone to fit in society’s system.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
We are all creators. Women literally create life and men create structure for said life so we create as humans naturally. I feel it’s most rewarding to see people find their self through their art. Learning to trust and love yourself while doing what you love…that is the biggest reward!
