We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janae White a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janae, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
When asked about earning my first dollar as a creative, I recall my experience at a women’s wellness conference in Rialto, California. It was a significant moment for me because it was my first time showing my art in a public space and I was able to make money from it. The event was particularly special because of the encouraging and informative atmosphere created by the women in attendance. This experience helped to jumpstart my art career from a hobby to a professional pursuit.
Janae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Before this event, I had never showcased my work outside of my dad’s office or my own home. Despite having a large number of paintings, I was unfamiliar with the logistics of hanging them, branding, or even setting up a table. However, I believe that displaying art is about more than just placing it on a wall. Through this experience, I learned a lot and was reminded to be adaptable in the face of unexpected challenges. If my sister wasn’t there or the event staff wasn’t so nice I would have been looking crazy but it all worked out and I got my foot in the door and I was able to meet some guest that would invite me to do some bigger shows in La
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can support the artist ecosystem by valuing and investing in the arts, whether it’s through attending performances, purchasing artwork, or providing funding for creative projects. Additionally, creating spaces and opportunities for artists to showcase their work and collaborate with others can help to foster a thriving artistic community. It’s important to recognize the value that art brings to our lives and to support the individuals who dedicate their time and energy to creating it. The main the is a respect artist as a whole and know that the world needs us
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the lesson that those who know you will be your biggest supporters. Through social media and public events, I have discovered that strangers can be the greatest supporters and help you throughout your career. Many artists desire the support of the community they grew up with, but I have found that strangers can provide the most significant and lifelong support. It can be challenging to let go of the belief that those closest to us will be our biggest supporters in life. However, as you have discovered, sometimes it’s the strangers who can have the most significant impact on our lives and careers. Here are a few reasons why this may be the case:
Strangers may be less biased: While our friends and family may have preconceived notions about us, strangers are more likely to approach us with an open mind. This can lead to more honest and constructive feedback that allows us to grow and improve as artists.
Strangers can bring new perspectives: When we surround ourselves with people who are similar to us, we may miss out on new perspectives and ideas. Interacting with strangers can expose us to different cultures, experiences, and ways of thinking that can enrich our lives and work.
Strangers can become lifelong supporters: While friends and family may support us out of obligation, strangers who connect with our work on a deeper level can become lifelong supporters. They may introduce us to new fans, opportunities, and collaborations that can fuel our careers for years to come.
Of course, it’s still important to value the support of those who know us best. However, it’s also important to keep an open mind and embrace the support of strangers who believe in our work.
