We recently connected with Janae Music and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Janae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every piece of work I release is meaningful because I write majority of my music. Just about everything I put out is a reflection of me and my truth or my experiences. However, my EP 1124 was super special to me. I was going through an emotional time dealing with relationship woes and it was just a huge release for me. It gave me room to let go and start over.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am super versatile. I don’t feel like I can be boxed in any specific category as a person or as an artist. I’m super expressive so I show multiple sides of who I am through music. I represent just about any and everything woman. Any experience you can have as a woman, I’ve just about been through it. I rap, I sing, I act, and so much more. I’m super sweet and sensitive but I’m also a baby thug!
I want everyone to know that in some way, I represent or register with you. You’re not alone in any experience. I truly love people because I see myself in everyone so I hope when people see me or connect with me, they see themselves in me as well.
I originally started in music just from passion. I enjoyed singing and it just lit a spark in me. I started doing open mics and people were rocking with me. I didn’t release music originally, but I was chastised about it a lot because I would perform it, but people couldn’t listen to it afterwards, so that got me to actually start sharing my art.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As an artist, I’m super expressive. I started out as an R&B singer. Later I realized that my environment plays a huge part in how I express myself. Growing up being rough, I tend to talk and write in the manner. I wasn’t doing too well with my R&B because my writing just wasn’t hitting! I was told to try to rap on a beat because my writing was harder than most singers. So, I have it a try! Turned out, I’m a pretty strong rapper. My love for singing has not changed. As much as I want to sing, rapping has taken the front because it’s just doing much better and spreading faster. It’s been a transition and a big adjustment to put singing on the back burner. I try my best to incorporate it in every performance because I need people to remember that I got vocals but sometimes we have to check ourselves about what we want and make some changes to benefit the things that are working best for us.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My end goal for all of my pursuits is to be able to give back. Of course I want to live a luxurious life and I want to take care of my family but most importantly, I want to take care of my community. I want to give people opportunities and support that they can’t access easily. I absolutely LOVE performing. I can do that on a small scale and that would be fulfilling for me. But I truly believe my purpose in life is to change the world. It’s to assist people without receiving anything in return. I want to be filthy rich so that I can help others obtain a life they didn’t know was possible for them. I want to fund programs for education, creativity, and advancement. That’s my mission.
