We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Janae Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Janae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I first started my business I knew that my name had to mean something not just to me but to those around me as well. I knew I wanted my name to be a part of it, so I started googling many different meanings of my first name. The one that stood out the most was “God is Gracious”. I wrote down so many names and none of them stood out to me. It took me two weeks until I gave up and decided to go on Facebook to a business group chat full of small business owners and ask for some help. Luckily there was this one person who inboxed me and gave me the idea. Heaven Dip’d. I fell in love with it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I started seeing different articles about “starting your own business”. At first, I just ignored them, but after a while, I started believing it was a sign to start my own. The first thing that popped into my head was skincare, next was T-shirts and Tote Bags. I was working at a preschool center at the time and they had to close due to Covid. I took advantage of that time and decided to do research. After tons of research, I decided to get my LLC. I checked the mail for weeks waiting to get my letter in the mail. When It finally came I remember running around the house screaming and showing my family. It was the best feeling in the world.
By the end of 2022, I plan to launch my t-shirt business first and skin care right after. With the right support system and funds, I know for a fact that this will be a success and I can’t wait to share it with everyone else.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and Youtube are my best friends when it comes to my business. I’ve learned so much by taking advice from successful business owners. There are so many people out there to help. I started with Facebook business groups and then worked my way to TikTok. There’s help everywhere.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I saved money from unemployment when my job closed due to the pandemic. I also tried to apply for grants and small business loans but had no luck with those.
