We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jana Bunge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jana, thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
Oh yes! I worked for a production company for 13 years and had an amazing boss/mentor. I was originally hired as a makeup/hair artist to work on commercial/video projects for local/regional and national campaigns. What began as a work project developed into my learning much more about the industry as a whole. I was part of an integral team of creative artists, both actors and behind the scenes/tech – all masters at their craft. I learned so much over those years working beside each one and developed long lasting friendships as well. My boss/mentor taught me to “think outside the box”, and I was able to train and learn other aspects of production that I’ve used many times over the years! Assisting in the edit bay during video edits, learning to work/run a teleprompter, handling wardrobe and props, even doing voice over work – being stretched and learning new things early in my career was an encouragement to me that I could tackle and succeed in anything that I put my mind to!
Every aspect of this business is like a puzzle – i.e. each working alongside another to create/produce the best project/film/shoot. Working together as a team has been the best “take away”!
Jana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My start in the beauty industry began over three decades ago and has evolved from early experience with major cosmetic lines, to on location hair & makeup for red carpet events, television shows, film, photo shoots to my favorite…weddings -I’m honored to be part of the working beauty industry!
Being the daughter of a hairdresser, as a young teen I looked forward to the Saturdays that I could “help out” at dad’s beauty salon. Cleaning brushes, sweeping the floor, answering the phone – I watched and learned first-hand from my father the importance of knowledge, perfecting the craft, and “just plain being kind to people and meeting their needs.” One of my favorite memories of dad was what he said to his clients as he finished up with their hair…” You look like a million dollars…and your HAIR LOOKS GOOD TOO!” And he meant every word! He was loved by his clientele, many of whom continued with him as weekly clients for over 40 years.
My experience over the years has taught me that the passion for excellence in bridal makeup & hair goes hand in hand with organization, skill and building lasting relationships with our brides and clients. I am blessed to have a fabulous team of incredible artists to provide that seamless experience for our brides and parties. Our attention to detail is vital – we will accentuate each woman’s natural beauty, as well as help create a relaxing atmosphere and calmness for what can often be a very stressful day.
The “pre-production” work that I do prior to any event is what sets us aside from many other companies. Creating specific timelines, storyboards of clients’ vision pics, and having our team arrive on site fully prepared (i.e., tables, chairs, electrical, all equipment and products, etc.). All of this combined will create a calm work atmosphere and seamless wedding day.
Overcoming struggles is part of this industry. The most important thing to remember: our goal is to meet and surpass the needs of each client. And this business is about relationships…building and nurturing relationships with our clients, fellow vendors, and artist teams. When relationships blossom – so will your business!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe that creating relationships with our clients/brides is the most rewarding part of this industry! It’s such an honor to share in the getting ready process for our brides. It makes my heart happy to see the love between our brides, families and bridal parties – and to be part of that “moment in time” with them is amazing and often brings tears to my eyes. And we LOVE pampering them too!!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Life is rarely boring if we’re open to learning new things. From books to podcasts, online classes and workshops – developing a growth mindset is imperative when new information, skills or hobbies present themselves. I’m always on the lookout for a new method, product, technique or idea that I can incorporate into our company and beauty business! Networking with fellow vendors and surrounding myself with likeminded people is the key. Some believe that “you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” …think about that! Set goals that are specific, measurable and attainable!
