Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jan POMEROY. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was really influenced to be an artist through my 9th grade art teacher, Mr Rooney. As I got older and enrolled in College I chose my major in art. I then proceeded to explore many mediums including wood and clay sculpture, painting and drawing. I was able to mentor under a cloissone’ enameling, Phil Lauer and also a fiber artist Helene Rumpel. I also took various workshops to learn mixed media techniques. So for years I would go back and forth between the fiber art and mixed media but the thing that has stuck was the mixed media. I love the experimentation and possibilities that can happen with that.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think the thing that sets me apart is the techniques i use and the combination of God guiding me in each piece. Many of my clients have remarked that the art has changed the atmosphere in their home to one of peace and aliveness. I am inspired by God’s creation- nature, plants, animals, etc. I take hikes in the Greenbelts of Austin or wherever i am to get refreshed and inspired. I exclusively do mixed media paintings and do offer canvas giclee prints as well in almost any size. I also have art cards for purchase. I do a small amount of stained glass work-suncatchers. That I am able to offer on a limited basis.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission for being an artist comes from God. I believe everyone is given gifts whether they chose to use them or not. I know my art is anointed and carry a presence- that is acknowledged by the people that have purchased my art. I know that quote by a famous artist: the mission of the artist is to bring beauty into a sometimes ugly world. I edited it a little. But that is my goal and to make people aware that there is a God that loves them.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was the victim of a romance scam and lost everything and thousands of dollars. I lived in a shelter for 6 months. With the help of God and my family and friends raising some money I was able to get back on my feet. Doing art through that process and praying and through other prayers were the thing that helped me through such a devastating loss. Knowing that God was with me through all of that was comforting.
