We recently connected with Jan Cañete and have shared our conversation below.
Jan, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Returning to college at the age of thirty was an exciting, yet challenging time in my life. I obtained my Associate’s Degree while working two jobs and raising a daughter as a single mom. My concentration of study was Fine Arts where I discovered my artistic gifts and talents. I was granted an academic scholarship to a dual program in the College of Architectural Design at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan and was motivated to expand my knowledge, upskill, increase my income and create a sustainable future. Unfortunately, after my second year, I found myself burned out, financially strained and felt my life was burdened with time constraints.
At this time, I was working in a spa as a manicurist and had a stable, consistent clientele for ten years. A takeaway from my work as a service provider is the deep, authentic connection that developed over the years between my clients and I. It was very rewarding and fulfilling to make people look good and feel good. The industry provided me numerous opportunities to learn other modalities, including Reflexology. This was the spark that ignited my interest in the healing arts!
To calm my nerves and clear my mind before a major test or presentation, I would receive Reiki from a co-worker. I recognized that my excitement peaked when introduced to energy healing. After researching local Reiki teachers, I signed up for a certification program to become a practitioner. Within one year, I completed five practitioner certifications, including the completion of a Reiki Teacher training. In complete awe of the healing benefits and results of Reiki, I was inspired to continue on the path of a healer. I decided to discontinue my collegiate studies and focus on my clientele and plans to build my private practice.
This phase in my life was definitely the defining moment where the trajectory of my professional career pivoted to the wellness industry. I realized that my passion to help others provided me with a sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction. Following my passion guided me to innovative thinking, boosted my creativity, and allowed me to showcase my true self and my unique talents and abilities.

Jan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Shamanic Healer & Reiki Master Teacher and I provide my clients with strategic tools to gain clarity and confidence to overcome anxiety. As a young adult, I experienced anxiety that kept me stuck in fear, worry, and sometimes anger. As my spiritual practices and energy work expanded, I gained the healing tools to work through my feelings and emotions, eliminating overwhelming angst. My 4-week program, Conquer Anxiety with Jan Cañete, helps people access their inner calm, release negative beliefs, re-establish self-trust, and confidently transform their lives with clarity. My 1:1 coaching integrates Shamanic Healing and Journeys with Distance Reiki. Additional offerings include: Reiki Practitioner Certification programs, tarot card readings, women’s healing circles and meditations, Sacred Henna Art, fiber art workshops, and women’s retreats.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Some of the most helpful qualities in the healing arts industry are empathy, compassion, good communication skills, patience, and a genuine desire to help others. Additionally, having strong ethics and a caring attitude towards clients is critical in building trust and establishing a positive therapeutic relationship. Also, staying up-to-date with the latest industry trends, collaborating with other professionals, and being a good listener are essential for providing effective care to clients.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
-Network: Networking with other professionals in the field has helped me build credibility and attract new clients. Attending networking events and joining professional groups to increase exposure has been effective.
-Focus on customer service: Satisfy your clients by providing personalized care and attention, responding to inquiries promptly, and being accommodating to their needs.
-Ask for referrals: Encourage satisfied clients to refer their friends and family to your business. Create a referral program that rewards clients for making referrals.
