We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jami’r Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jami’r, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I have always made sure to align myself with people who I looked up to like Gail King, Arsenio Hall and Oprah. I created a podcast for the everyday person to tell their stories “creatively “.
I could have definitely taken more broadcasting and journalism classes earlier on which could have had me further along in my career. Knowing how to research, write and interview are the most important essential skills.
I have always said it’s the “getting started “ that’s takes the longest… because of fear of failure.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first got into the film, tv and radio industry while attending North Carolina A&T State University. Graduating with a BFA in Communications and Fashion provided me an opportunity to dig into the entertainment industry and carve out a lane just for me to begin building a platform for everyday creatives.
Once I created The “JamirSmithShow “ Podcast it allowed me to connect with many different people in the world to help tell their own special stories. Help provide listeners a beacon of hope and see how much in common we all are.
I am most proud of how the show relates to all walks of life and how many peoples stories provide provides a sense of HOPE for our listeners. The “JamirSmithShow “ Podcast will always be a show to tell a story that the everyday person will be able to relate to.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
As a society we have to continue to create spaces for artists, creatives and visionaries to produce their stories for the world to see. Allowing spaces for creatives to build partnerships, discover additional outlets and continue to learn an ever evolving environment to help teach others is how society could support a thriving creative ecosystem.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Everyday I get the opportunity to build a relationship with someone, learn something about their life’s story. The “JamirSmithShow “ Podcast has rewarded me to provide a platform for the everyday person to talk about their life, struggles and opportunities and then show our listeners how to take life one day at a time. We call that our quick therapy session in the show and has helped many people through dark times in their lives.
