Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamillia Lawrence . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamillia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
There was a young man named Messiah who frequented Violet Mae’s for his hair care needs. He was a bright and ambitious individual, but like many, he faced financial challenges from time to time. One day, Messiah walked into the salon with a worried expression on his face. He had a crucial job interview coming up, but he couldn’t afford to get his hair done.
Seeing his distress, I knew I had to help. Understanding the importance of presenting oneself confidently in such situations, I offered Messiah a seat and assured him that we would find a solution together. As he explained the significance of the interview and his financial constraints, I listened intently, determined to alleviate his worries.
Without hesitation, I began working on Messiah’s hair, using my expertise to create a polished and professional look that would impress any interviewer. Throughout the process, we shared stories and laughter, easing the tension that had weighed heavily on Messiah’s shoulders.
When I finished styling his hair, Messiah looked in the mirror with a mixture of surprise and gratitude. He couldn’t believe the transformation, both in his appearance and in his spirit. With a newfound sense of confidence, Messiah left Violet Mae’s ready to conquer his interview with his head held high.
A few weeks later, Messiah returned to the salon with a wide grin on his face. He excitedly shared the news that he had aced the interview and landed the job. Grateful for the support he received during a challenging time, Messiah expressed his heartfelt thanks for the kindness and generosity shown to him at Violet Mae’s.
In that moment, I realized the true impact of my work—not just in transforming hair, but in uplifting spirits and empowering individuals like Messiah to pursue their dreams. His success story served as a reminder that sometimes, the greatest rewards come from helping others in their time of need.
Jamillia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As the founder of Violet Mae’s, I am Jamillia, inspired by my Great Grandmother’s love for natural hair. Overcoming challenges in accepting our hair’s natural state, I found confidence through Locs. Despite doubts in cosmetology school, I envisioned a solution and created Violet Mae’s hydration Kit, addressing moisture needs with pH ionized water and African-sourced oils. What sets me apart is my dual expertise as a Loctician and barber, offering a one-stop shop for both men and women. Alongside my hair journey, I pursued a career in professional boxing, making history as Atlantic City’s first female professional fighter and recently achieving Hall of Fame status.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In the early days of Violet Mae’s, building a clientele and reputation wasn’t easy, especially when Locs weren’t taken seriously. Armed with determination and a stack of business cards, I hit the streets, attending local events, hair shows, and networking gatherings, introducing myself to anyone interested in natural hair care. Each business card was a tiny beacon, spreading the word about Violet Mae’s and the unique approach to hair care it offered.
But it was on Facebook where I truly found my stride. In a time when few were leveraging social media for their businesses, I saw an opportunity. I created a page for Violet Mae’s, sharing before-and-after photos, tips on natural hair care, and testimonials from satisfied clients. Soon, word began to spread beyond my local community. People from all over were reaching out, eager to experience the transformative power of Violet Mae’s first-hand.
Through old-school methods like business cards and the power of social media, I not only built a loyal clientele but also earned a reputation as a trailblazer in the world of natural hair care. Today, Violet Mae’s is more than just a salon—it’s a movement, empowering people to embrace their natural beauty with confidence. And it all started with a simple business card and a dream.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It was a pivotal time for Violet Mae’s, a moment when doubts threatened to overshadow my vision. Despite pouring my heart and soul into the business, I faced setbacks that tested my resolve.
One particularly challenging day, after a string of discouraging events, I found myself questioning everything. The weight of skepticism from cosmetology school, the uphill battle of gaining recognition for Locs, and the relentless demands of entrepreneurship seemed insurmountable.
In that moment of doubt, I reflected on the journey that led me here. I remembered the words of my Great Grandmother, Violet Mae, who instilled in me a deep love for natural hair and the importance of perseverance.
Drawing strength from her wisdom, I refused to let adversity define me. Instead, I doubled down on my commitment to Violet Mae’s and the community it served. With renewed determination, I sought out innovative solutions, adapted my strategies, and forged ahead with unwavering resilience.
Slowly but surely, the tide began to turn. Clients who once doubted the viability of Locs as a serious haircare option became advocates, spreading the word about the transformative experiences at Violet Mae’s. The business grew, fueled by the passion and dedication that had carried me through the darkest moments.
Today, as I look back on those challenging times, I’m reminded that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about rising stronger, wiser, and more determined than before. And at Violet Mae’s, resilience isn’t just a trait—it’s a way of life, a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
