We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamille Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamille , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Coming up with the name, SimplyJamille, was fairly easy for me. So many times, I have thought that opportunities to represent a brand were unattainable. I would look at these extravagant photos and commercials featuring women that resembles those that you only see in commercials, runways and print ads. I wanted to give my audience a different perspective. One that was simple.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
During the pandemic, we all had a lot of time on our hands. This was when I began to really dive into social media. I would be on different platforms that I had never really explored. I began to meet and virtually socialize with women with considered themselves, Social Media Influencers. I found what they did so interesting. Then I found that some of these women made an actual income, or were given free products in exchange for creating ads and posting them on their social media platforms. I wanted in. I love the idea of being a “normal, everyday woman”, who can be just like the models and actresses that we see on tv, in magazines, etc. Once I got started, brands began reaching out to me, mostly small businesses, but I love that part especially! I work with a lot of women-owned, small businesses, which is such a highlight for me! I also love creating photos and videos showcasing the brands that I work with. One of my other passions is writing, so I proudly created my own blog as well.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m still building my audience, it’s a constant. But when I began, I was first into promoting being healthy. I was posting tips and photos of recipes and yoga sequences. But it’s hard to keep up if that’s not how you live your everyday life. Someone once told me, to be successful, you have to be authentic. So I began to think about my niche and what I loved doing on a constant basis. I am what I consider a girly-girl, and I love beauty, make-up and fashion. So I cleaned my page and started all over. I began following others who had the same niche as me. Then they and others began following me back. I am a micro-influencer, which is perfect for me. This allows me the opportunity to engage with others and have them engage with me in a more intimate setting. I find that those who have a larger following, don’t really do this. It’s all about the numbers, and I’m more about my content reaching people who are just like me. I love engaging by returning comments, answering questions and I love going to their pages and engaging on their posts as well. I have met so many friends, I even just recently joined a pen-pal group with other ladies where we send small gifts and letters to brighten each others day!
I would say the best way to build your audience, is to do something that you love and be authentic and engaging.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Engaging is the main way that I keep in touch with clients!! And the only way that I know to foster brand loyalty is by providing honest reviews of the products that I advertise. I have turned down opportunities because of this. If I don’t believe in a brand or the products that they are providing, why would I post that for my followers?
