We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamilla Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jamilla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
From Day one I knew that I desired my business to be ran as a business with employees and multiple locations; however, I did not start with employees. It all started with me working in different cities and events, I.e. weddings and fashion shows alone but desiring a team. I would have to lug bags of makeup, lights, and chairs by myself to set up and breakdown consistently. Being booked for many engagements let me know that it was time for employees.
Recruiting employees and looking for people are completely different; I did not recruit properly so I did not have the best experience. I have trained a lot of women and assumed that it would be easy to hire and I was wrong.
If I started today. I would do the whole process over; I would actually do a hiring process. I have learned how important it is to have an application and see who to interview before offering a position.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For anyone who doesn’t know me, I am Jamilla, international beauty educator. I got into the makeup industry in 2010 as a makeup enthusiast just loving makeup and no real intention on becoming a professional. I now offer eyelash extensions, ombré brows, teeth whitening and tooth gems! The mission of my brand is to bring exclusive beauty treatments to women who value trendy services, as well as making their lives as women a little more convenient. Naturally, we as women love to beautify ourselves however, we may lack the necessary time to do so, and that is where my brand comes in to play.
I am most proud of the growth in my business. I truly appreciate the last 13 years that I have experienced as a business owner; there is so much more in store for Jamilla Artistry. I always want people to know that Jamilla Artistry is an exclusive brand that truly values the heart and beauty of women. My goal is to always bring value to the women that encounter my brand and leave an ever lasting impression of the love of God on them.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been consistency. Making sure that I show up for my brand whether it has been in person at events, sharing my business cards with people I meet out and about or online, I have to show up. Aside from that, actually engaging with people so that they can get to know my personality has been one of the biggest ways for the growth of my clientele. People truly have enjoyed my personality and my skill set that it has truly been easy to gain clientele.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the beginning of my journey in about 2015, I became homeless while still building my business. I was known as a make-up artist and I had a friend reach out to me asking for help in her beauty business. She was a lash tech and remembered that I was in the beauty industry and had great clientele and was extremely hard-working so she knew that I would pick up eyelashes really quickly and so she begin training me just to work in her shop. I was extremely resistant because I had a terrible issue with perfectionism so I wanted to be the best at eyelash extensions immediately, and it was a very slow growth process. I got better and better each day with as many clients as I had to service and it was great.
My life changed within three months and I was back on my feet. There were a lot of pitfalls in between, but every single day I showed up at work like there was no storm happening in my life, and my business grew amazingly in so many new opportunities came to me. I’ve grown my business tremendously since then and am now celebrating 13 years of business.
