We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamilet Figueroa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamilet, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Absolutely. At Hablamigo, we are deeply committed to serving an underserved community that is often overlooked—parents of children with speech and language delays, particularly in Hispanic and bilingual families. This community faces unique challenges that go beyond the typical struggles of raising a child. These parents often encounter language barriers, cultural stigmas surrounding speech delays, and a lack of accessible resources tailored to their needs.
Let me share a story that perfectly illustrates why this matters and how Hablamigo is making a difference. A mother named Marisol reached out to us after trying for months to find support for her 4-year-old son, who was struggling to speak clearly. As a bilingual family, they were unsure if speaking two languages at home was causing confusion or if her son’s speech delay was part of a bigger issue. Marisol felt isolated, judged by other parents, and overwhelmed by the conflicting advice she received from well-meaning friends and family.
When she found Hablamigo, everything changed. Through our app, Marisol discovered culturally relevant, bilingual resources that empowered her to work with her son at home. The app’s progress-tracking feature gave her peace of mind, showing her the strides her son was making with every exercise. Most importantly, the tips for parents helped her feel more confident in her role as her child’s first teacher.
Marisol’s story is not unique. Millions of families face similar challenges, and many don’t have the means to access private therapy or the knowledge to support their children effectively. Hablamigo was created to fill this gap, offering a free version to ensure accessibility for all families and a premium option for those who want additional features. Our mission is to bridge the gap for these underserved families and ensure every child has the opportunity to communicate clearly, build connections, and succeed in life.
By addressing this need, we’re not just helping children—we’re empowering families to thrive together, breaking down barriers of language, culture, and accessibility one step at a time.
Jamilet, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Jamilet Figueroa, a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and the founder of Hablamigo, an app dedicated to helping Speech Language Pathologists and Parents support their children’s speech and language development.
The inspiration for Hablamigo came from my struggle to find Spanish therapy materials as a Bilingual SLP. Also, I saw first hand parents struggling to find accessible, effective resources to support their children at home. Many felt overwhelmed and unsure about how to help their children thrive in communication. I knew there had to be a better way to bridge this gap—and that’s how Hablamigo was born.
Hablamigo is more than just an app; it’s a trusted companion for families. We offer interactive, real-image-based exercises, bilingual resources, and actionable tips for parents to use in their everyday routines. Our app also features automatic progress tracking, which gives parents and professionals clear insights into a child’s growth over time. Whether it’s helping a child speak in complete sentences, articulate clearly, or build social skills, Hablamigo provides practical solutions that empower parents to take an active role in their child’s development.
What sets us apart is our deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by bilingual families and those in underserved communities. We’ve designed Hablamigo to be accessible, culturally relevant, and user-friendly. Our free version ensures that every family, regardless of their financial situation, can benefit from the app. For those seeking even more robust features, our premium version offers additional tools and content.
I’m most proud of the impact Hablamigo has had on families. Hearing stories of children making their first friends, expressing their needs and emotions, and growing confident in their communication skills is incredibly rewarding. It reaffirms why we do what we do.
For potential clients, or followers I want you to know that Hablamigo is here to simplify and enrich the journey of helping children become strong communicators. Our mission is to ensure every child has the tools and support they need to succeed at home, in school, and within their communities. We’re not just building an app—we’re building a community of empowered parents and professionals working together to make a difference.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When it came to funding Hablamigo, I took a very deliberate and disciplined approach. I’ve always been good at saving money and avoiding unnecessary expenses, so when the idea for Hablamigo started to take shape, I knew I wanted to self-fund the project. Once I had enough saved, I hired an app developer who could bring my vision to life. I provided him with a detailed prototype and all the content for the app, from the exercises and tips for parents to the user interface design and progress tracking features. This hands-on involvement allowed me to ensure every element of Hablamigo reflected the needs of the families and professionals we aim to serve.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience has been at the heart of my journey with Hablamigo. The road from having an idea to seeing the app come to life has been anything but easy. When I first conceived of Hablamigo, I was filled with passion and excitement, but I quickly realized how much I needed to learn to turn my vision into reality.
I had to dive into topics I’d never studied before, from business strategy and marketing to app development and user experience design. With no formal background in these areas, I taught myself through late-night research, online courses, and seeking advice from mentors and peers. It was overwhelming at times, especially while managing a full-time job and balancing my personal life.
There were moments of doubt, especially when the financial and time demands seemed insurmountable. But I reminded myself of why I started this journey—to help children and families who desperately need support. That purpose became my driving force. Every small victory, like completing the prototype or receiving positive feedback from parents during early testing, reminded me that the sacrifices were worth it.
I’ve learned to juggle multiple responsibilities, prioritize what truly matters, and stay focused on the big picture. There were countless late nights and weekends spent working on the app, but I refused to give up. Resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges; it’s about facing them head-on and finding a way to move forward.
Today, seeing Hablamigo make a real impact in people’s lives is the ultimate reward. It’s proof that hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to your mission can turn even the toughest journey into a meaningful success.
