Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamilah Espinosa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jamilah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
As an immigration attorney, I have the privilege to serve the underserved by representing asylum seekers who often face nearly insurmountable barriers to finding safety and justice. My clients have left everything familiar, fleeing persecution, violence, or oppressive regimes in their home countries. They arrive here without resources, sometimes without family, and usually without any understanding of the U.S. immigration system. The legal process they face is daunting and complex, and without support, many would struggle to advocate for themselves. By guiding them through each step, providing legal representation, and standing with them in court, I help ensure their voices are heard and their rights protected. It’s meaningful work, knowing that my efforts help these individuals and families achieve stability and safety they might not otherwise attain.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into immigration law was shaped by my experiences as a military spouse, raising a family while my husband served our country, and witnessing the resilience and sacrifices that come with service. I attended law school during my husband’s military career, balancing the demands of motherhood and education. It was a challenging time, but it allowed me to understand the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and the need for meaningful support. I am the proud mother of two boys.
My commitment to immigration law began when I volunteered with an organization supporting migrants who had survived human trafficking and domestic violence. Seeing firsthand the courage of these individuals and the barriers they face, I felt an undeniable calling to serve. Since then, my focus has been on representing those who often go unheard and unseen, helping asylum seekers and those facing similar hardships navigate the complex U.S. immigration system.
In my practice, I advocate for my clients’ rights, giving them a voice and a fair chance at rebuilding their lives. I understand the immigrant experience, not only from a legal standpoint but from a deep place of empathy. I offer comprehensive immigration services tailored to those seeking citizenship, residency, asylum, those affected by domestic violence and trafficking. I am most proud of the impact my work has on my clients’ lives and the opportunity to support them in achieving stability and safety. What sets me apart is a commitment rooted in my personal history, cultural background, and deep understanding of the challenges my clients face.
Above all, I want my clients to know that I am here to fight alongside them and that I believe in the power of resilience and community. My work is more than a profession; it’s a calling, grounded in empathy, determination, and a belief in justice for those who need it most.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is undoubtedly referrals. In fact, around 90% of my clients come to me through word-of-mouth, often because I’ve helped a family member or friend, which builds a level of trust that naturally extends to their network. I believe in forming genuine connections with my clients, and when they feel heard and supported, it often leads them to share their positive experiences with others. This sense of trust is invaluable, especially in immigration law, where understanding and empathy make a huge difference.
I also use social media as a platform to make immigration concepts more accessible. Through videos and live sessions, I explain key aspects of immigration law and answer questions in real-time. These live Q&As allow me to connect with a broader audience, provide insights into the process, and offer guidance to those who may not have access to legal advice otherwise. This outreach not only helps people understand complex topics but also builds relationships with potential clients who might need representation in the future.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my social media audience has been a gradual and evolving process. I currently have a few thousand followers across platforms, and while it’s still a work in progress, it has been an effective way to reach people organically. One of the key strategies I used was going live weekly across Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. These live sessions became like a mini-show, where I’d address common questions, provide accurate information about immigration, and break down complex topics in a way that was accessible and easy to understand.
Hosting live sessions has been invaluable for both connecting with current clients and attracting new ones. People want accurate information, and they also want to feel a sense of trust and connection with the person behind the information. Going live allows me to engage directly, answer questions in real-time, and address topics that are most relevant to my audience. In today’s digital age, seeing someone live—responding and engaging—helps people feel that connection, and trust grows from there.
For those just starting on social media, my advice is to be consistent, stay authentic, and create content that genuinely helps people. You don’t need a huge following to make an impact; sometimes, just a few dedicated followers can help spread the word and build your reach. Going live is also a great way to add that personal touch, which goes a long way in building an audience that trusts you and sees your value.
