We were lucky to catch up with Jamila Surles-Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamila , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The choice to be an entrepreneur is a risk in and of itself so I applaud anyone who has taken the journey and stuck with it! However, I took the risk of stepping out of my comfort zone to get into the world of Media. I have always known that I wanted to make an impact in the lives of others. I wasn’t always sure how that was going to happen. All I knew was that I wanted to have my business represent my purpose and positively affect, not only people who we provide services for, but also the people who are watching. Our goal was to offer several platforms where people could introduce their services and products and how they are using the gifts that they have in their business. These representations are valuable to those who aspire to find their purpose and utilize their gifts also. This is risky because, in my opinion, not only is this about impact but also having to ensure you are building a network, running the business, and investing the time, resources and efforts it takes to provide quality services and generate leads for clients. It requires putting yourself out there to network, managing your time, and having a work/life balance. As a mother and wife, this can be challenging at times but my passion for what I do allows me to keep going. Also, the decision to replicate these efforts in several ventures including Real Estate.
Jamila , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had a vision back in 2015 to create something that was bigger than me. I was in Corporate America but was always inspired by those in Media and creatives like Oprah, Denzel Washington, and Angela Bassett among many others who are extremely talented but also are able to be Philanthropists because of the platforms and opportunities they were given. Not only did I want this for myself but thought this is a great dynamic for people who are everyday business owners, entrepreneurs and creatives. What I did was create a Multi-Media company that encompasses social media marketing, public relations, and media. The goal was to make these more accessible and by doing this we could inform the public of our clients’ businesses and services and cover their stories through our online show “The Jamila Show” and creating content that is relevant. This generates leads for our clients, providing opportunities for growth, and gives the public the opportunity to support and utilize the services and products that are beneficial and valuable for them. What sets us apart is that we are able to provide opportunities for small and large businesses to scale because we help foster a network for the collaborations and partnerships among those in various walks of life. We are most proud of our ability to create opportunities that remove limitations in the ability to market effectively via Television (Epic Entourage TV on Roku), social media, advertising and the ability to tell their story.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
My business does have multiple revenue streams. We offer a platform for those who have products or businesses in the beauty industry through EpicFabulosity and The Ultimate Experience Gift Boxes. EpicFabulosity is a same-day delivery service for beauty supply products and we market the businesses on our platforms. There are opportunities to add products in our gift boxes that have self-care, health and wellness, and supplements in The Ultimate Experience Gift Boxes. I am also a Real Estate Agent.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal and mission that is driving my creative journey is to inspire people to utilize their purpose and gifts in business and generate income doing so as well as the opportunity to give back to organizations that are making a difference in their respective industries as well.
