We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Susslin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
As an author, the kindest acts bestowed upon me have been those people who have read my book and took time out of their busy lives to write a sincere review of my book. Reviews are so helpful and so much appreciated. I love reading them and seeing how my book has impacted someone’s experience after reading it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the author of “A BiDOGraphy: The Life & (Crazy) Times of Cool Hand Luke.” It’s the true story of the adventures and misadventures of Cool Hand Luke, a fifteen-pound little Jack Russell Terrier who thought he was ten times his size. He was the dog who “got it.” He had an uncanny ability to know just what to do in any situation he and I, his Fur Mom, encountered. We found ourselves in adventurous, dangerous, hilarious and precarious situations on an almost daily basis. I have recounted the best of these stories in the pages of my book. Anyone who owns a terrier, or any dog for that matter, will be able to relate to the tales told about him. The stories in my book will make you laugh, cry and hopefully want to give your own dog a good old-fashioned belly rub.
I realized I had more stories to tell about Luke than I had about anyone I know or have known. It took me many years before I finally sat down to write the book. I have had various careers throughout my life that took up much of my time. I am a former police officer, model, and TV host. I am currently working as a Realtor in Northern California.
Once I began writing my book, the memories came flooding back and the words flowed. Writing, designing, editing and publishing were more difficult processes than I thought they would be, but I loved every minute of it. It was as if Luke were still here by my side, cheering me on. I am very proud of the fact that I didn’t just talk about wanting to writing a book. I did it I encourage anyone who has this same dream or desire to go for it. You’ll be glad you did.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of the creative process of writing my book is that I have been able to share the tales of Luke’s life with people everywhere. He was a special dog. So many people could write their own books about their dogs, and many have. I hope by sharing my experience with this process, I can inspire others to do the same.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As I mentioned previously, my goal was to share Luke’s life. I also write about our rat terrier, Bella. She was a rescue dog. I would be so happy if someone read my book and decided to rescue a pet and give them their furever home.
