We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Stever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My passion for music came at the age of fourteen when my older brother brought home a guitar, it wasn’t long before I got my hands on it and never put it down. I was self taught until attending a Classical Music Performance course in College. A few years after College I became very interested in becoming a professional songwriter and made my way to Nashville, Tennessee where I honed in on my skills and was persistent on perfecting the craft.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in the small town of Prince Edward County, Ontario Canada. As an early teen I had always dreamed of being a rockstar thanks to countless hours of watching MTV music videos. Started guitar at fourteen, went to Classical music school to obtain the skills I knew I would need to make the dream happen. Once finishing school I ended up working on a construction site where I was first introduced to County Music. I really liked what I was hearing lyrically in the songs. I knew I wanted to become a professional songwriter so I did everything I could to meet people in the industry. One of the best moments I had in my journey was attending a songwriting cruise out of Galveston, Texas where I met industry professionals from Nashville, L.A. and New York. I remember it like yesterday when one of the music business professionals said “Your songs are commercial as hell, you should be in Nashville” So, I went home quit my job and came to Nashville, As a musician I knew it was the right place for me.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is seeing the impact my songs have on the listeners.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am a Singer Songwriter. Not a scientist. Not a Doctor. Not a Factory Worker. A Singer Songwriter. It is my calling. It is who I am. My mission is to share my gift with as many people as possible and hopefully have a positive impact on their lives.
