Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Seeker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jamie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Seeker Solution’s first client actually signed on before the business officially did!
I was at a crossroads and about to depart from my previous role as Operations Manager from a small business. As the only person at my company in the role I had, there were no peers I could lean on internally. So I consciously sought out those relationships with others that were going through the same things I experienced at work. I made these connections with other business leaders through my current job and mastermind and networking groups, etc. Many of these relationships were with business partners and vendors who I worked with already and others were business owners and operators in completely different industries, etc. that I met in these groups. When it was time for me to begin my transition out of that job, this group of people was the first to hear about my plans and I went to them for support and feedback about my next steps.
The response was so unexpected and extremely encouraging. The majority of them asked what salary I wanted in my next role and what responsibilities I wanted to oversee and when I could meet up with them to discuss if I would consider coming to work with them! These were decision-makers in their own businesses, so many of them didn’t have any open positions but were just interested in having me come in and work with them. This overwhelming response made me pause. It wasn’t just one or two of them. It was the majority of my circle! I realized I had something that they all wanted in their companies but I had no idea what that was.
I took lunch dates, office interviews, coffee meetings and phone calls. Many emails were exchanged and I walked away realizing that I was selling something all along that these leaders identified as valuable. I just had to figure out what that was! Because the outcome of these meetings was clear that I could write my own ticket, I decided not to go to work for anyone else and take any of the positions they were proposing. Instead I wanted to figure out how to go to work for myself and bring all of them in. I didn’t just want to go to work for one company, My vision was bigger. I wanted to work with ALL of them!
Since all of the balls were in my court at this point, I decided to do an inventory of my skill set to see if there was a service or something I could provide that I could monetize. As someone always in operations roles, I was always responsible for managing. Managing teams, managing financials, managing business development and managing processes and customer experiences, to name a few. At the end of the day, I was always responsible for managing outcomes. So I built solutions that I believe every small business needs and packaged them together as individual solutions for companies to choose from. This is how Seeker Solution came to be.
But before I even got my official business model and offerings and into place, I had one vendor-turned client that was already bought in. Since I had hired him to do a job for us in my current role, he was on the receiving end of my management style and got a first-hand look on my approach to running the business. He said, I want what you’ve got. I know if you bring to my company what I’ve witnessed you doing in your current job, we will be successful. So there it is. I had the privilege of starting my own company with a client already on the books. My first clients all started off from the unassuming connections I made in business relationships: my colleagues and their referrals. That is how my business started and grew in the first years of formation. The rest is history!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I founded Seeker Solution to help business owners and leaders improve business operations in their companies. We are also here as a resource for our clients to ask for advice, lean on for support and be an understanding and listening ear when you just need to unleash and vent!
I started off my career in operations management, so I understand because I’ve been there. And now that I have a business of my own, I connect with other owners through a common understanding of experiences that only we face in this role. Prior to starting Seeker Solution, no matter what company I was with or what level of management I was in, it was ALWAYS so much more than what one person should handle alone. I had many times throughout my journey where I felt overwhelmed and alone. It didn’t matter how many hours I added to my work day, I could never seem to keep up and the load only got heavier and heavier.
This is why I started Seeker Solution. It took me stepping out and away from the hustle to realize that I didn’t have to do it alone. And that what I went through and learned from could be repurposed to help others overcome those same obstacles.
We found that there are usually areas that you’re strong in and in turn, those tasks and responsibilities bring joy to your job. At the end of the day, that’s why you’re in that position: because you’re good at it and you really do love it. But there are always parts of the job that become so tedious and after time and without proper attention, it drains the life out of you. My consultants and I have identified different areas of a business operation and have put them into individual solutions to fill the gaps you may have in your company, for whatever reason. They are our strategic planning, financial management, training and development, human resources, marketing strategy and operations management solutions.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There’s really no way around this one. We have simply delivered what we’ve promised. That is how we’ve been successful at Seeker Solution. We are very intentional on setting clear expectations, deliverables and time tables up front. We identify resources and needs that are necessary to get the job done. We assign a value to it and agree on terms with our clients. Then we execute it and exceed expectations. Then they tell their colleagues! There’s no shortcut to building a reputation and I believe in doing what we say we are going to do is the most effective way to build one.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Happy clients tell their friends. Many times business owners run in the same circles and they talk about their lives. Most of their lives revolve around their business, so if our clients are happy with their work, they tell others. That recommendation is so valuable and is the absolute best source for ideal clients for us because others sell us and they’re already sold and bought in by the time they reach out to us.
