Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Rogers . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
As a small business owner in the hair industry I can say with absolute 100% certainty that it takes a village of support to be truly successful. I joined a building business group, Thrivers Society, early on when I decided to go out on my own. Having a community to run ideas with, get ideas from and everything in between was truly priceless. Continuing my education is also imperative. Color trends change constantly, it’s my job to stay up to date.

Jamie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have an interesting back story to how I entered the world of hair. I had taken cosmetology in high school – I was in the my eighth new school by this time and just wanted to graduate on time. If I’m being honest, I didn’t have much interest in it. I graduated and went on to work in Property Management in Manhattan’ for ten years. Twelve years later on my 30th birthday I took and passed the NY state board of cosmetology. What set me apart the most from other hairdressers was the simple fact that I had been the client in adulthood. I knew how it felt to be excited to go to a hair appointment. Waiting the endless weeks for it finally be time for the appointment! I also understand the financial side of it. I understand that my clients are spending their hard earned money and do everything I can to deliver them fantastic results. I was the client. I have invested a tremendous amount of time and money to provide my clients with not just a hair appointment, but an experience. It all starts with a pre-consultation email before your first appointment, this way I am fully prepared when you come in. Hot towels, essential oil selections, truffle chocolates and an array of snacks are just a few the the amenities I provide. I take tremendous pride in not only my work but the environment I provide. I am endlessly seeking out education, the best new tools and products on the market. I had an highly respected educator say to me once “I think you’re one of the most educated colorists I know”. You can never know enough.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I was told recently by a hairstylist who has been in the game for 35 years “you know you have an incredible reputation, right?”. I was so happy to hear that! I honestly didn’t fully know that. I don’t spend my time fixated on what others think of me. I don’t “follow” all the local hairdressers to see what they’re doing. I found that has always helped me to keep the comparing to a minimum. I am open, honest and professional. My reputation has grown just by word of mouth.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The most impactful book/practice I ever read/implemented wasn’t actually a business book. Miracle Morning is a book/practice that changed my life. Getting my personal mental state in order had the biggest impact on my business mind. Speaking positively to myself, having a positive mindset sent my business on an upward trajectory. Making sure to take time to take care of myself allowed me to take care of my business.
