We were lucky to catch up with Jamie Rodgers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamie, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Honestly, this is not something that I knew I would be pursuing. When I was younger around about 5 or 6 years old, I drew a lot. Later in my younger years, I started drawing clothes for my Barbie’s. My mom gave me a game on our computer that allowed me to draw fashion designs and print them out and make clothes. After high school, I pursued interior design. I did like it but it felt like I was restraining my creativity. I wanted to do things more freely as that’s how I operate in general. As Art courses were in my curriculum in college, I found my love back for the arts. Even since then I have not been able to put a paint brush or a canvas down. I love art and has been a passion for awhile.
Jamie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I create art that celebrates women of color. I noticed that there is a lack there of when it comes to representation of women of color in fine arts. I had to study art history in college and I noticed that a lot of the art that I saw in my history books did not look like me. If it did look like my people, it was depicted in a way that we were slaves or poor when in reality we wasn’t always a slave or even poor.
My mission is to depict art that show us in a different light and represent us in reality of who we actually are.
Hopefully one day my art will be in your art history books.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal / mission is to create art that reflects women of color as we are today and not how we were. I believe if our people do not see themselves other than what they are being taught then lose a society of powerful people. Representation matters in all industries not just Art.
Art is just a good start.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
