Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Peer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Making the decision to switch careers at the peak of my current career, as I was on the brink of promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, was undoubtedly a risky move. However, after spending 21 years in uniform and reaching a point of burnout, I knew it was a risk worth taking. The realization that my career was the only aspect of my life that seemed to be flourishing, albeit with its own challenges, prompted me to take a step back and reassess my priorities.
The effects of burnout were pervasive, infiltrating every aspect of my being. Physically, emotionally, and mentally, I felt drained and exhausted. It became clear that my well-being was suffering, and this had a ripple effect on my health, my relationships with my family, and even my social life. The more I reflected on my situation, the more I understood that my career, which had once been a source of fulfillment, had become an impediment to investing time and energy into other areas of my life that held greater significance.
I came to the realization that there is more to life than professional success alone. While the potential promotion would have been an achievement in itself, I recognized that it would not address the underlying burnout and the toll it was taking on my overall happiness and fulfillment. By making the decision to switch careers, I was taking a leap of faith, acknowledging that my mental and emotional well-being, as well as my relationships, health, and personal growth, deserved equal attention and dedication.
Although it was an incredibly difficult decision to depart from the path I had been on for over two decades, I firmly believe that it was the right one. By prioritizing my holistic well-being over professional accolades, I am now able to invest the time and energy into the areas of my life that truly matter. This transition may be daunting, and the road ahead may be uncertain, but I am confident that by taking this risk, I am opening myself up to new opportunities for personal and professional growth, fulfillment, and ultimately a more balanced and meaningful life.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back and make the choice again, I would still choose the same profession and specialty. Yes, however, there are certain aspects I would have approached differently. Looking back, I recognize that having a professional coach who understood both my work and the challenges of family life would have been extremely helpful. I believe that with their guidance, I would have made much better decisions regarding work-life balance.
While I did have mentors along the way, they were also busy professionals, and I often hesitated to burden them with what I perceived as “my issues.” In hindsight, I realize that having a dedicated professional coach who could provide unbiased guidance and support would have been invaluable. This coach would understand the intricacies of my work and the demands it placed on me, as well as the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between work and family life.
Having a professional coach would have allowed me to openly discuss my concerns, aspirations, and challenges without feeling like I was imposing on someone’s valuable time. They would have provided a safe space to explore work-life balance and helped me make more informed decisions in line with my priorities. Their expertise and understanding of the nuances of both work and family life would have been instrumental in guiding me towards a more fulfilling and balanced approach.
I firmly believe that investing in a professional coach who could have provided guidance tailored to my specific circumstances would have enabled me to navigate the challenges of my career with greater clarity and purpose. They would have helped me identify and maintain a healthy work-life balance, ensuring that I could dedicate the necessary time and energy to both my professional and personal responsibilities.
While I cannot change the past, I have learned from this experience the tremendous value of seeking external guidance and support. Moving forward, I am committed to advocating for the importance of professional coaching, particularly for individuals facing similar challenges. By sharing my insights and encouraging others to prioritize their well-being and work-life balance, I hope to empower individuals to make better decisions and lead more fulfilling lives both personally and professionally.
