Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Paris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I’ve always wanted to start my own business – it was just a matter of how and when. During my time at San Diego State University, I met many successful entrepreneurs that became my inspiration for taking the leap and starting Luxuria Public Relations. I found my passion in PR after joining the public relations program and gaining hands-on experience through PR internships and eventually employment. From there, I knew I wanted to be in the PR business.
After earning my Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in public relations in 2012, my best friend Claudia Huizar and I sat down in my 500 square foot apartment in Mission Valley and made the decision to quit our jobs and start Luxuria PR. It was probably one of the scariest moments of our lives, but we were young and had very little to lose. Looking at it from that perspective made us feel a little better (ha!).
For the next several weeks, I spent countless hours cold calling local businesses in my living room. My boyfriend at the time (who is now my husband), would look at me wide-eyed, as I went through 50 to upwards of almost 100 calls a day. Cold calling isn’t for the faint of hearts, let me tell you. I can’t even count how many times I was hung up on or told never to call again. But I wasn’t going to stop. Then one day, a bakery I called took a chance on me. That bakery turned into our very first client. Then one client turned into two, two turned into four and the rest was history.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

One thing I am most proud of is being able to lead the business as now the sole proprietor and build a team that has helped my business grow. Hiring and employing people is not something you’re taught at school. I had to learn how to become my own HR manager and hire, train and retain employees. Running a business as a one woman show is a completely different ballgame than having employees join your business.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When Claudia and I started Luxuria PR, we took on every type of client and project we can get our hands on. We wanted to build our company roster and gain as much experience in various industries as possible.
As a business owner, you have to be willing to accept the fact that there will be times where business will be booming, then suddenly you’re second guessing yourself as to why you’re even doing it. If you’re doing it for the money, you’re in it for the wrong reasons. I remember there was a year where business was slow, and we were really struggling. But we reminded ourselves that failure wasn’t an option – we were in it too deep already. So we kept going. And I’m so glad we did.

From onboarding a client to becoming their agency of record for many years, we become an extended part of their team. We foster brand loyalty by providing high quality work, which in turn translates into results. Before taking on a client, we make sure that we truly believe in the passion and mission behind their brand and cause. When you believe in something, it doesn’t really feel like work (cliche, but it’s true). I am proud to say these are the type of clients we have today.
